AMS 5643

AMS 5643, “Steel, Corrosion-Resistant, Bars, Wire, Forgings, Mechanical Tubing, and Rings 16Cr – 4.0Ni – 0.30Cb Nb) – 4.0Cu Solution Heat Treated, Precipitation Hardenable,” has just been released.  This popular Aerospace Material Specification is used for corrosion-resistant steel.  The material is provided in the form of bars, wire, forgings, mechanical tubing, and flash welded rings up to 8 inches in diameter.  Stock of any size for forgings, flash welded rings or headings is also included.

There are a number of “slash sheets” to be used with this standard.  They address the various conditions for precipitation hardening for your material.  They are the AMS 5643/H1025, the AMS 5643/H1100 and the AMS 5643/H1150.

The AMS 5643 itself follows the usual structure of such material specifications.  It starts with the scope and referenced documents sections.  Section 3 covers the technical requirements, Section 4 is on quality assurance, and Section 5 reviews delivery preparation.  There are short sections on acknowledgement, rejections, and notes to complete the publication.

What’s new in the Revision U update?  The committee has provided you with information both at the beginning of the document and by the use of black lines in the margins.  You’ll notice that the title has changed, as well as paragraphs 3.4.3.2.1, 3.7, 4.4, 4, and 4.7.  The committee (AMS F) notes that these changes result from a limited scope ballot, in line with the protocols required by SAE for good standardization management.
