ASCE 7 for Building Loads Updated

ASCE 7 2016 Edition has just been released.  This frequently referenced standard is titled Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures.  The publication provides you with information on the influence of loads on structures.  It is widely used in building codes throughout the United States.  It is next scheduled for review in 2022.

It has been over 6 years since this standard has been revised.  So there are a number of new features in this update that will be of great value to the building industry.  Let’s take a look at some important changes.

First, the issue of tsunamis has been addressed.  There is a new chapter specifically for the tsunami design provisions.  The information has been added due to concerns here on the West Coast as well as in Hawaii.

Also, new seismic maps are now included.  There is additional information particularly for the area surrounding Las Vegas, NV.  The seismic maps have been impacted by the updated National Seismic Hazard Maps.

Other map changes include new wind speed maps.  This has resulted in reduced wind speeds for much of the country.   Special wind study zones have been clarified, including new maps for Hawaii.  Risk Category IV  has been separated from Category III as well.  So you’ll be able to identify your wind speed parameters by location.

There’s new regional snow data.  And updated rain duration provisions now match the International Plumbing Code provisions for drainage.  Appendex E has new provisions for performance fire design.
