AISC 325 Steel Construction Manual 15th Edition is here!

AISC 325, the Steel Construction Manual, has just been updated!  The new 15th Edition is available now from Document Center Inc.  The new update replaces the previous 14th Edition from 2011, which is now obsolete.  Included in the publication are the 2016 Edition of Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and the 2016 Edition of Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges.  The publication is available in hardcopy format.

What is the Steel Construction Manual?  AISC 325 consists of a number of parts on various topics related to steel building design and construction.  This includes summaries of specification requirements and other design recommendations and considerations.

Part 1 is on the dimensions and properties for structural products commonly used.  Part 2 covers proper material specifications for these products, as well as general specification requirements and other design considerations.  Parts 3 through 6 cover the design of members. ISO 11504 for assessing petroleum contaminated soil is updated

ISO 11504 has been updated.  It’s titled Soil quality – Assessment of impact from soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.  The new 2nd Edition is a technical update and replaces the previous 1st Edition from 2012.  Both editions are available from Document Center Inc. in either paper format or for pdf download.  They can also be provided as part of our enterprise custom collection subscription service.

ISO 11504 is a technical guideline for choosing the percentage and the types of petroleum compounds to look for when analyzing contamination of soils.  This is the type of standard that will be used to determine if there has been soil contamination from the hurricanes in the southern U.S.  Since petroleum hydrocarbons can be hazardous to human health, proper soil analysis is paramount.

Spotting these compounds can be a challenge when soil samples are taken to the lab.  So this standard reviews how to make a number of critical choices for measurement and risk assessment.  The ISO 11504 starts out with the usual scope, referenced documents, and definitions sections.  Section 4 discusses the principles affecting this type of assessment – Time and distance, for example, can degrade the samples.  So there are a number of factors that have to go into planning your testing.

Section 5 is on the relevant fractions and individual compounds.  This is important since petroleum is composed of various components.  And the types and percentage of hydrocarbons in a sample is the critical issue.  Tables and text provide you with the detail needed.

Section 6 specifically addresses petroleum hydrocarbons in soil.  Discussion on the composition and characteristics of crude and processed oils is enhanced by tables with information on the various petroleum mixtures, compounds, and their attributes.  Section 7 then reviews the exposure element that affects hydrocarbons when present in soil.

ISO 11504 Section 8 covers additional issues related to the sampling and investigation.  These issues range from preventing the loss of these volatile compounds in your samples to their proper storage and transportation.  The document is completed by the addition of 3 informative Annexes.  They discuss various physico-chemical properties of petroleum compounds, hazard level information, and an overview of suggested fractionations in various countries.  A 38-item bibliography is also included.

IPC-6013 D is here for Flexible Printed Boards

IPC-6013 has been updated again.  The new Revision D is available now from Document Center Inc. in both paper and pdf download formats.  The title of the standard is Qualification and Performance Specification for Flexible/Rigid-Flexible Printed Boards.  These requirements are for flexible printed boards designed to IPC-2221 and IPC-2223.  This new edition replaces all previous revisions, including the Revision C from 2013.

For a general overview of this standard, see my previous post from early 2014 when the Revision C became publicly available:  IPC-6013C Released.  This will give you an idea of the coverage of this important IPC standard.

The 80-page Revision D hhas a number of of changes.  These are marked in the text by the use of a grey background for areas with updates.  The changes are spread throughout the publication.  For  example, the IPC-6016 was cancelled by IPC.  So relevant HDI conformance and acceptance criteria are now part of this new IPC-6013 Revision D.

Other IPC-6013 D new and updated requirements cover:

  • final finishes,
  • rigid-to-flex transition zones,
  • deformation anomalies including wrinkles, creases and soda strawing,
  • marking,
  • registration (annular ring),
  • conductor thickness reductions,
  • dielectric removal in holes,

AWS D17.1/D17.1M Update – Aerospace Fusion Welding

AWS is the premier standards organization for the development of welding standards.  And the AWS D17.1/D17.1M is one of their most frequently-used publications.  Now there’s a new 2017 Edition available at Document Center Inc.  You can get copies in both paper format and for pdf download.

The standard is titled Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications.  It is a standard that was developed by industry to take the place of Department of Defense documents being withdrawn during the 1990’s mil spec reform.  The first edition was issued as AWS D17.1 in 2001, replacing MIL-STD-2219.  The new 2017 revision is the 3rd Edition, making previous editions obsolete.

Fusion welding refers to welding that includes the melting of the materials during the joining process.  It is particularly important to the airspace industry since quality demands are high.  You’ll find information on both welding practices and non-destructive examination tests for welds in this standard.

The AWS D17.1/D17.1M is arranged in the usual fashion, with the scope, referenced documents and definition sections at the beginning.  The standard then covers design, procedure and performance qualification, and fabrication.  Section 7 is on inspection, while Section 8 covers the repair of existing structures.  Section 9 on non-flight hardware completes the main body of the document.  As noted, there are 9 additional Annexes, both normative and information, at the end of the publication.

If you use this standard, you’ll want to know what the changes in the new  edition are.  Here is the list provided by the AWS Committee:

(1) Removed Annex B for effective throat
(2) Added Annex D—Materials in Table 5.4 with cross-referenced UNS numbers to various proprietary trade names.
(3) Added Annex G—Samples of Welding Forms for WPSs, PQRs, and Welder Performance Qualifications by removing the samples from elsewhere in the standard.
(4) Added Annex H—Qualified Positions for Production Welding
(5) Added Annex I—Common Acronyms Used in this Standard for quick user reference.
(6) Added Figures 5.11C and 5.11D to the standard.
(7) Separated Table B.3 into B.3 and B.3M, one for U.S. Customary Units and one for the International System of Units.
(8) Conversion values were updated to meet the requirements of AWS A1.1, Metric Practice Guide for the Welding Industry.

The committee also used the conventions of underlining text and adding lines in the margins to point out all changes from the previous 2010 Edition.

What’s in a Number? The Fed Spec Numbering System

What’s in a number?  For folks familiar with specs and standards, the answer is “A lot!”  The Fed Spec numbering system is a good example of this.  Fed Spec numbers have a lot of meaning packed into a small amount of space.  And once you see this example of how engineers number the standards they develop, you’re sure to see more hidden meanings in the other standards you use.

First, what is a Fed Spec?  This is a common term for Federal Specifications.  These documents are “owned” by the GSA, the U.S. General Services Administration.  These folks are responsible for procurement at the Federal level of our government.  So they have a need for specifications to reference in their contracts much the same of the Department of Defense does.

Since the government specs and standards programs have been in place for many decades, they pre-date the public use of the Internet.  If fact, they predate the use of computers and networks completely.  Many specs and standards have been generated over the years for use in government procurement.  And back in the days of paper records, the need for ways to streamline finding documents necessary for contracts was acute.

For Fed Spec Numbering, a schema was developed to keep “like” specifications together.  This was done by a letter system that segregated specifications by commodity group.  Thus a contracting officer looking for specifications on textile products could go directly to that section of the specifications on the subject.

How is this “pre-sort” done?  Document numbers start with specific sets of letters for each commodity group.  There can be 1 to 3 letters at the beginning of the document number.  Each set of letters is for 1 commodity.  After the pre-designated number string, there is a hyphen and then the first letter of the title of the document.  Then there is another hyphen and the actual numeric designation.

So let’s take a look at some examples:

M-D-2798, Dinnerware, China (Decorated)

In this case, “M” is for the commodity group ceramics, “D” is the first letter of the title, and “2798” is the numeric component.

QQ-A-1876, Aluminum Foil

Here, the “QQ” part of the number is for metals, and many important Fed Specs for metals used to be in this section (most are now withdrawn).  The “A” is the first letter of the title, and the “1876” is the numeric string.

PPP-B-1606, Box, Fiberboard Special Use (Post Office Money Order Forms)

Another favorite designation – The “PPP” covers packaging and packing.  There used to be a “PPP” number on the bottom of most cardboard boxes!  The “B” is the first letter of “Box,” and “1606” is the numeric string.  Here you can see some of the scope of work for the GSA purchasing agents — They provide support for the post office!

So now you can see that the string of letters at the head of a Fed Spec number can be 1, 2, or 3 letters.  They are always a set of the same letter — there is no “ABA” or another other combined string.  And each covers a general subject area.  The complete list of available letter strings and their commodity coverage is available for you at the bottom of this post.

ESD ADV1.0 Updated – EOS/ESD Glossary

ESD ADV1.0 has been revised.  The new 2017 Edition is available now from Document Center Inc. in both paper format and for pdf download.  The title of this publication is ESD Association Advisory for Electrostatic Discharge Terminology – Glossary.  This new update replaces the previous 2014 Edition which is now obsolete.

ESD ADV1.0 is a 42-page compilation of terms used in the electrical overstress/electrostatic discharge (EOS/ESD) community.  It is the complete list of terminology used by the ESDA organization in all of its publications.  Current definitions are included as well as some obsolete terms.  This is important because the electrostatic discharge industry does have some special usages for terms familiar to the wider electrical and electronics industry.

Definitions start in Clause 3 on page 1 and continue through page 35.  Then a 4-page index covers the location of all of the terms included in the advisory.  What kinds of terms are covered?  Well, let’s just say it runs the gamut from “A” (AC equipment ground) to “Z” (Zap (colloquial term)).

IEC 61131-2 Updated – Programmable controller equipment

The IEC 61131-2 Edition 4.0 is now available.  This standard is titled Industrial-process measurement and control – Programmable controllers – Part 2: Equipment requirements and tests.  The new 2017 Edition replaces the previous Edition 3.0 from 2007.  It is a technical update, so if you’re using this standard you’ll need to purchase the new edition.  Be sure to buy your copy from an authorized IEC distributor like Document Center Inc.

The IEC 61131-2 includes specific requirements and tests for industrial control equipment.  This equipment includes programmable controllers, programmable automation controllers, remote I/O, programming and debugging tools, industrial PCs, displays and other human-machine interfaces, and other distributed control systems.  This is the equipment that drives automated industrial processes — by batch, discrete or continuous control.

The standard reviews such areas as testing and verification, operating conditions, and tests and requirements for temperature, climate, mechanical, functional (for power supplies and other components), and EMC.  Marking and documentation requirements are also specified.

IEC 61131-2 is organized into 8 Clauses.  The first 3 are the usual scope, referenced documents, and definition sections.  These are followed by information on compliance and type tests.  Clause 5 covers normal service conditions and requirements.  Clause 6 is on the functional requirements.  EMC requirements are defined in Clause 7.  And marking and manufacturer-supplied information is the topic of Clause 8.  There are an additional 6 Annexes.  They are a mix of informative and normative (must comply) information.  Coverage includes temperature derating for altitude, Zone C – EMC immunity levels, legacy techniques deemed out-of-date and no longer valid, and so on.  A 24-item bibliography completes the standard.

New IEEE 45.1 for the Design of Shipboard Electrical Installations

IEEE 45.1 has just been released.  The title is Recommended Practice for Electrical Installations on Shipboard – Design.  It is part of the IEEE standard 45 series on recommended practices for electrical installations on ships and marine platforms.  It has been developed by IEEE’s Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee.

The IEEE 45.1 is intended to be used with each of the other standards in the series.  The design recommendations include a variety of power systems (ac, dc, emergency), shore power, power quality and harmonics, electric propulsion and maneuvering systems, motors and drives, thrusters, and steering systems.  These systems will all be installed shipboard.   Further, the topics in IEEE 45.1 should be considered throughout the life of the project.  This covers the design phase through construction.  It is intended to facilitate the integration of such electrical systems at the shipyard level.

In the past, IEEE 45 was a single standard.  Now with the division of the document into the 9 parts, there are changes you need to be aware of.  The IEEE 45 is still a valid document.  But now there are an additional 8 parts.  These cover design (the 45.1) as well as controls and automation, systems engineering, marine sectors and mission systems, safety considerations, electrical testing, ac switchboards, and cable systems.  Most of the standards in the series have been published.

The 198-page standard includes the usual scope, referenced documents, and definition sections.  Then there are an addition 25 sections for a wide variety of considerations.  These range from system engineering, power system characteristics and design, to whistle and siren control systems and heating equipment, to system studies, analysis and reports.  There is an 11-item bibliography as well as a normative Annex B.  This covers electric plant load analysis.

ISO/IEC 29151 – Protecting Personal Information

ISO/IEC 29151 has just been released and boy am I glad!  This new IT standard focuses on the protection of personally identifiable information (PII).  The complete title is Information technology – Security techniques – Code of practice for personally identifiable information protection.  It’s available now from Document Center Inc.

High profile data breaches are undermining consumer confidence in companies using the network for transmission of personal information.  And yet, more and more of our data is stored and transmitted every day.  We expect our suppliers to protect our information, and regulators are starting to agree with us.  This presents a real challenge for business.  I remember that in the early days of the Internet, it was said that the only true security was “air” (not being connected to the internet at all).  Now with thumb drives, etc., not even “air” can do the job.

The ISO/IEC 29151 is a guidance document.  It builds on the many IT security standards already in force.  It was developed in conjunction with the ITU and is identical to ITU T Recommendation X.1058.

The document is based on the structure of ISO/IEC 27002 (Information technology – Security techniques – Code of practice for information security controls).  Using that document’s clauses 4 to 18, guidance is given on using controls specifically geared for PII security.  What would those controls be? The Annex A (mandatory) contains the extended list.  These additional controls supplement those already in the ISO/IEC 27002.  They are divided into 12 categories, taken from ISO/IEC 29100.  A 14-item bibliography completes this 48-page standard.

ISO/IEC 29151 provides organizations with specific guidance for protecting consumer information.  This is a critical task for many organizations moving forward.  The risks associated with not taking proactive steps in this regards range from harm to your customer base and reputation to legal non-compliance with ever-increasing regulations.  You can’t afford not to be paying attention to this issue.

AS 13004 for PFMEA released

Are you AS 9100 certified?  Looking for assistance with process risk management?  SAE has just released the new AS 13004 for you!  It’s titled Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and Control Plans.  It is in line with and supports the use of AS 9100, AS 9102, AS 9103 and AS 9145.  It gives you the requirements for identifying, assessing, mitigating, and preventing risks in your manufacturing process.  This is achieved by the use of process flow diagrams (PFDs), process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA) and control plans.

This new standard was developed to help the aviation, space and defense industry improve customer satisfaction.  In a challenging environment with high expections, this sector is constantly looking for ways to improve safety and reliability.  Globalization of the supply chain is only complicating this challenge.

It was written with the aerospace engine supply chain in mind.  But of course, the tools and principles involved can easily be transferred to other segments of the industry.  Certainly, FMEA has been used with great success in the automotive sector, for example.

The 30-page document begins with the usual scope, referenced documents, and definitions sections.  The bulk of the standard is focused on requirements, including an overview, applicability, training and competency, organization requirements, and so on.  Detailed information is provided on the PFD, PFMEA, and control plan.

However, 9 additional appendices contain a wealth of supporting information for you.  They cover such topics as an assessment checklist, templates for PFMEA, PFD, and control plan,  linkages between the three tools, and so on.
