New EIA 364-28 Revision F just released on Vibration Test Procedure for Electrical Connectors and Sockets

EIA 364-28F, titled “TP 28F, Vibration Test Procedure for Electrical Connectors and Sockets,” has just been released.   It replaces the previous EIA-364-28E dated 8/2006.

EIA 364-28 is one of a series of approximately 110 sub-parts of EIA 364 devoted to various Test Procedures for Connectors and originally released by EIA.  Since EIA ceased operations earlier this year (it was the Electronic Industries Alliance when it was founded), this group of documents is actually maintained by the ECA, the Electronic Components Association.  And ECA has now consolidated forces with National Electronic Distributors Association (NEDA) to form the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA).

The standard test procedure details a method to assess the ability of electrical connector components to withstand specified severities of vibration.  The object is to determine the effects of vibration within the predominant or random vibration frequency ranges and magnitudes that may be encountered during the life of the connector.

New Revision F for MIL-HDBK-57, Listing of Fastener Manufacturer’s Identification Symbols

MIL-HDBK-57 Revision F has just been released.  The handbook, titled “Listing of Fastener Manufacturer’s Identification Symbols,” replaces the previous edition MIL-HDBK-57E from 2008.  The 252 page handbook is a compilation of the identifying symbols of fastener manufacturers as provided by the manufacturers themselves.

This revision contains the names, addresses, and the symbols of all fastener manufacturers whose identifying symbols were received by November 30, 2006.  Additionally, each manufacturer who was listed in a previous revision of this handbook was contacted to confirm the accuracy of the published information.  The listing is also annotated to indicate both those manufacturers who have and have not responded to confirm or update appropriate information.   Information about manufacturers who have not responded is still maintained in this latest revision.

The document contains both an alphabetic index of manufacturers (Index A) and a listing of manufacturers indexed by their identification symbol (index B).  It also contains a registration form and information on how to be included in the listing in the future.

MIL-HDBK-57 defines a manufacturer as a source which substantially makes the supplies, either by hand or machinery, out of raw materials. The term “fasteners” refers to those threaded items included in Federal Supply Class (FSC) numbers 5305 – Screws, 5306 – Bolts, 5307 – Studs, and 5310 – Nuts.

New AMS 4928 Revision S is now available on Titanium Alloy

New AMS 4928 Revision S, “Titanium Alloy Bars, Wire, Forgings, Rings, and Drawn Shapes, 6Al – 4V, Annealed,” has just been released for public distribution.  AMS 4928 has been in use since 1957.  The new issue replaces Revision R from 2007.

This specification covers a titanium alloy in the form of bars, wire, forgings, flash welded rings, drawn shapes, and stock for forging or flash welded rings.  It is part of the Aerospace Material Standards series from SAE International.

Additional AMS standards widely used for this type of titanium are AMS 2488, “Anodic Treatment – Titanium and Titanium Alloys Solution pH 13 or Higher,” and AMS 4911, “Titanium Alloy, Sheet, Strip, and Plate, 6Al – 4V, Annealed.”

MIL-M-38510 J on Microcircuits recently validated

MIL-M-38510 Revision J, titled “Microcircuits, General Specification for,” was validated on 6/29/2011 with the release of Validation Notice 3.  The notice confirms that MIL-M-38510, Revision J with Amendment 1, is still valid for procurement by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The notice also reaffirms that the specification is inactive for new design.  This means that it can only be used for replacement (replenishment) purposes.

MIL-M-38510J establishes the general requirements for monolithic, multichip, and hybrid microcircuits.  It defines the quality and reliability assurance requirements which must be met in the acquisition of microcircuits.  Detail requirements, specific characteristics of microcircuits, and other details of microcircuits that are specific to particular uses are all addressed in what are called slash sheets.

The previous validation notice, Notice 2, released in March of 2001, defined the documents that should be used in lieu of MIL-M-38510 for new design.  The bulk of the specification is covered by MIL-PRF-38535.  However, some topics are addressed by MIL-STD-1835, MIL-HDBK-780 and MIL-HDBK-983, which has since been canceled without replacement.

FYI, a review of standards is often set to a regular schedule, such as the five year cycle set by ANSI, the American National Standards Institute.  When a review confirms that the document is still good without any further changes, a validation, reaffirmation, or reapproval notice may be issued.  It may be released as a stand-alone document, as with the DoD validation notices, or as a reprint with the reapproval date included, or just as a notation on a website or catalog.  When this occurs, the actual content of the document is unchanged.

New amendment 1 for ISO 2859-1, Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes — Part 1: Sampling schemes indexed by acceptance quality limit (AQL) for lot-by-lot inspection

ISO-2859-1:1999 titled “Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes — Part 1: Sampling schemes indexed by acceptance quality limit (AQL) for lot-by-lot inspection” has just been modified by a new amendment 1 dated 6/15/2011.

The 8 page amendment makes pen-and-ink changes to a number of pages.  Changes include updates to references to other ISO standards and to accommodate the scoring roles of switching.

The document itself is one of a series of 6 standards on Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes.  Part 10 is now the general introduction, with Parts 1 to 5 each defining a particular type of inspection.  Here’s the list:

New 2011 2nd Edition for ISO 8015 on Geometrical product specifications (GPS) — Fundamentals — Concepts, principles and rules

ISO 8015 has just been released as the 2nd Edition as of June 2011, with the new title, “Geometrical product specifications (GPS) — Fundamentals — Concepts, principles and rules.”  It replaces the ISO 8015:1985 1st Edition which was titled “Technical drawings. Fundamental tolerancing principle.”

ISO 8015:2011 specifies fundamental concepts, principles and rules valid for the creation, interpretation and application of all other International Standards, Technical Specifications and Technical Reports concerning geometrical product specifications (GPS) and verification.

It applies to the interpretation of GPS indications on all types of drawings.

For the purposes of ISO 8015:2011, the term “drawing” is to be interpreted in the broadest possible sense, encompassing the total package of documentation specifying the workpiece.

New ISO/TS 12417 covers Cardiovascular implants and extracorporeal systems — Vascular device-drug combination products

ISO/TS 12417, titled “Cardiovascular implants and extracorporeal systems — Vascular device-drug combination products,” has just been issued as the new 1st Edition.  These combination products are medical devices with various clinical indications for use in the human vascular blood system.

A ISO/TS is actually an ISO technical specification.  It offers a technical solution to a particular problem,  without conflicting with existing International Standards.  For implanted products, ISO/TS 12417 should be considered as a supplement to ISO 14630, which specifies general requirements for the performance of non-active surgical implants. ISO/TS 12417 should also be considered as a supplement to relevant device-specific standards, such as the ISO 25539-1 and ISO 25539-2 series specifying requirements for endovascular devices. Requirements listed in ISO/TS 12417 also address VDDCPs that are not necessarily permanent implants.

ISO/TS 12417:2011 specifies requirements for vascular device-drug combination products (VDDCPs) based upon current technical and medical knowledge. A VDDCP incorporates, as an integral part, substance(s) which, if used separately, can be considered to be a medicinal product (drug product) but the action of the medicinal substance is ancillary to that of the device and supports the primary mode of action of the device.

With regard to safety, ISO/TS 12417 outlines requirements for intended performance, design attributes, materials, design evaluation, manufacturing, sterilization packaging, and information supplied by the manufacturer.

Delivery systems or parts of the delivery system are included in the scope of ISO/TS 12417 if they comprise an integral component of the vascular device and if they are drug-covered (e.g. drug-covered balloon catheters and drug-covered guidewires).

Pumps and infusion catheters which do not contain drug coverings, and whose primary mode of action is to deliver a drug, are not addressed in ISO/TS 12417.

Procedures and devices used prior to and following the introduction of the VDDCP (e.g. balloon angioplasty devices) are excluded from the scope of ISO/TS 12417 if they do not affect the drug-related aspects of the device.

ISO/TS 12417 is not comprehensive with respect to the pharmacological evaluation of VDDCPs. Some information on the requirements of different related national and regional authorities is given in an annex.

Bioabsorbable components of VDDCPs (e.g. coatings) are addressed by ISO/TS 12417 in their connection with drug-related aspects of the device.

ISO/TS 12417 does not address issues associated with viable tissues and non-viable biological materials.

There’s a new TAPPI T1211 2011 Edition out for Laboratories Providing Reference Materials for TAPPI Standards

TAPPI T1211 (also known as TAPPI TM 1211) has just been issued as the 2011 Edition.  Titled “Acceptance procedures for laboratories providing reference materials for TAPPI Standards,” the  standard practice establishes acceptance procedures for the listing of organizations as calibration laboratories or providers of standardized materials in the TAPPI Standards. Such organizations are involved with the maintenance of master instruments, calibration of test instruments and the issuance of calibration materials or transfer standards.

This standard practice establishes the “self certification” procedures for an organization to nominate itself, and be accepted, as a TAPPI calibration laboratory for inclusion in the listing of such sources within the published TAPPI Standards. Organizations that have national or international recognition as maintainers of master instruments, calibrators of test instruments to either master instruments or to calibration standards, issuers of calibration standards, and/or issuers of transfer standards are considered to meet the requirements of T 1211 for listing as a calibration laboratory.

All organizations requesting a listing must be willing to sell or provide the materials to any other company or organization that has a legitimate interest in using the method in conjunction with testing activities.  The organizations so accepted by TAPPI will be listed as maintainers of master instruments, calibrators of test instruments to either master instruments or to calibration standards, issuers of calibration standards, and/or the issuers of transfer standards.

TAPPI, the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, packaging and converting industries, issues a number of different standards.  The T series is the Test Method standards group.  The T1211 was originally released in 1996 and has been revised in 2001, 2006, and now again in 2011.  A list of all certified laboratories may be found in the Reference Materials List, to be used in conjunction with the Supplier Directory.

New ANSI/AWWA D100-11 Released – AWWA Standard for Welded Carbon Steel Tanks for Water Storage

The new 2011 Edition of AWWA D100 has just be released for public distribution and is available from Document Center Inc.  AWWA D100, titled “AWWA Standard for Welded Carbon Steel Tanks for Water Storage,” provides minimum requirements for the design, construction, inspection and testing of new welded carbon steel tanks for the storage of water at atmospheric pressure.  The new revision replaces the previous 2005 Edition with the 2007 Errata.

This standard is based on the allowable-stress design method, with the exception of reinforced concrete foundations.  Additionally, all tanks storing potable water are expected to have roofs. Tanks storing nonpotable water may be constructed without roofs.

This edition of the standard includes numerous corrections, updates, and new material to clarify some of the existing requirements.

1. Section 1 was revised to show the latest edition of references.

2. Section 3 was revised to match the wind exposure definitions of ASCE 7-05. The requirement that dome roofs constructed of aluminum shall comply with ANSI/AWWA D108 was added. The stress evaluation procedure of ASME SECTION VIII, DIV. 2 was added as an acceptable method for evaluating local shell or pedestal stress for anchor chair designs that are based on a detailed analysis.

3. Section 10 was revised to include an erection tolerance multiplier for elements of ground-supported flat-bottom tanks that are designed in accordance with Sec. 3.4.4 and subject to small compressive stresses.

4. Section 11 was revised to make leak testing of the bottom-to-shell joint mandatory for all ground-supported flat-bottom tanks.

5. Section 13 was revised to not require a site response analysis for short-period structure located on liquefiable soils. The site-specific procedure of FEMA 450 was deleted, and the site-specific procedures of ASCE 7-05 were referenced. The scaling requirement for the alternate procedures was clarified.

6. Section 14 was revised to clarify the DMT-thickness requirement for Category 1 and Category 2 materials when impacts are provided.

7. Section 15, covering dome roofs constructed of aluminum, was deleted and replaced with a reference to ANSI/AWWA D108.

ANSI/AWWA D100-11 does not cover all details of design and construction because of the large variety of sizes and shapes of tanks. Details that are not addressed shall be designed and constructed to be adequate and as safe as those that would otherwise be provided under this standard. And this standard does not cover concrete–steel composite tank construction.

New MIL-STD-1501 Revision F on Chromium Plating, Low Embrittlement, Electrodeposition

New MIL-STD-1501F titled “Chromium Plating, Low Embrittlement, Electrodeposition” has just been released.  The 15-page document replaces the MIL-STD-1501E, which is now obsolete.

This standard covers the engineering requirements for electrodeposition of hard chromium on high strength steel substrates and the properties of deposit.  Subsequent heat treating techniques needed to insure low hydrogen embrittlement of steel are also described.

Chromium plated to this standard will meet the performance requirements of SAE AMS-2460, which supersedes SAE AMS-QQ-C-320. This standard may be used whenever SAE-AMS-QQ-C-320 is specified.

MIL-STD-1501 provides guidance for the Air Force repair process, acquisition, and manufacture of parts and/or spare parts on the landing gear of all military aircraft.
