IEC 62133 on Battery Safety Replaced

IEC 62133, Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary cells, and for batteries made from them, for use in portable applications, has been replaced.  The updated publication comes in two parts — The first for nickel systems, the second for lithium ones.  The new standards are available now from Document Center Inc.

We’ve had questions about these two new parts.  Let’s take a look at the basic changes.  I’ll review them one at a time.

IEC 62133-1, Edition 1.0, Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary cells, and for batteries made from them, for use in portable applications – Part 1: Nickel systems

Of course, this new Part 1 only contains the information on nickel based batteries.  So it covers the requirements and tests for safe operation of portable sealed secondary nickel cells and batteries.  These will contain alkaline electrolyte.  And both intended use and misuse are addressed.  Additionally, button cell requirements are now included.

IEC 62133-2, Edition 1.0, Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Safety requirements for portable sealed secondary lithium cells, and for batteries made from them, for use in portable applications – Part 2: Lithium systems

For Part 2, references to nickel have been eliminated since that’s now in Part 1. Coin cell requirements have been added.  Information on the assembly of cells into batteries has been updated.  There are mechanical tests for vibration (7.3.8.1) and shock (7.3.8.2).  And IEC TR 62914 has been added to the bibliography.  Another interesting point is that in section 7.3.9 on design evaluation, the forced internal short-circuit test only applies to Korea, Japan, Switzerland and France.

The standard is for portable sealed secondary lithium cells and batteries containing non-acid electrolyte.  And again, coverage is for both use and for reasonably foreseeable misuse.

The two new parts are a technical revision, making the previous 2012 Edition of the IEC 62133 obsolete.  You’ll need to get copies of the new publications.  Use Document Center Inc. for your purchase.  You can search for and order IEC standards with confidence at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  We are an authorized distributor of these publications.  Here are links to the order page for IEC 62133-1 and the order page for IEC 62133-2 for your convenience.
