IEC Guide 112 for Multimedia Equipment Safety Updated

IEC Guide 112, Guide on the safety of multimedia equipment, has been updated.  The new Edition 4.0 replaces the previous Edition 3.0 from 2008.  It is a technical update which means that all of the earlier editions are now obsolete.  The new Guide is available from Document Center Inc., an authorized distributor of the IEC Standards.  Since it is a guide, any information it contains is not mandatory.

What does the IEC Guide 112 cover?  It provides guidance on how to use the current editions of IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1 when working with multimedia equipment.  As a guidance document for safety requirements, it reviews specific issues you need to address for these products.  Then it  tells you where you will find the requirements within the specific clauses of applicable IEC standards.

Areas reviewed include compliance, marking, general requirements, and interfaces to the telecommunication network.  In addition, this new revision includes information on equipment containing coin/button cell batteries.  There is also general guidance provided for some of these topics, such as national differences found in Australia with regards to connecting to the network.

What are the changes in this new Edition 4.0?  First of all, it’s been updated to reflect technical changes in the latest editions of IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1.  And as noted above, it now has information on coin or button cell batteries (including lithium batteries).
