New IEEE C63.4 2014 on Electronics Equipment Noise Emissions

There’s a new IEEE C63.4 2014 Edition, “American National Standard for Methods of Measurement of Radio-Noise Emissions from Low-Voltage Electrical and Electronic Equipment in the Range of 9 kHz to 40 GHz.”  It’s the first update since 2009, and you’ll want to get a copy if you need to meet the requirements of 47 CFR Part 15, the FCC rules on radio emissions.  The new 170-page standard contains a wide range of revised sections, including the removal of Clause 13 on intentional radiators (now in IEEE C63.10.)

You’ll find new information in these areas:

  • The scope has been clarified with expanded text
  • There’s now information on the test setup for tablet PCs
  • Visual display information is added based on the size of the screen
  • Clause 4 and Annex H are clarified regarding the proper use of the average detector and frequency range
  • Table 1 has been replaced by 3 tables
  • Test site validation interval is added for sites used above 1 GHz.
  • Clause 5.5 is updated
  • Measurement instrumentation uncertainty using CISPR 16-4-2 or the IEEE C63.23 has been added
  • Annex D is harmonized with IEEE C63.5
  • Annex I is added for the application of C63.4 to U.S. and Canadian regulations
  • Annex J is added for guidance on the construction of nonconductive EUT (equipment under test) support tables
  • Annex N is added – Test site-specific hybrid antenna qualification procedures, limitations and acceptance criteria
  • The Bibliography and Keyword Annexes are moved to Annex O and Annex P respectively

Information on other technical changes can be found in the introduction to this new revision, along with an extensive history of the standard and it’s development.
