ISO/ASTM 52900 – Terminology for Additive Manufacturing

ISO/ASTM 52900, “Standard Terminology for Additive Manufacturing – General Principles – Terminology,”  has just been released.  This terminology standard is a co-publication of both ASTM and ISO.  It is available now from Document Center Inc. in both the ISO and the ASTM Editions.

I was speaking with a collegue at the World Standards Week activities last fall and realized during our conversation that the release of vocabulary and terminology standards for a particular technology signals that standardization is in process.  In this case, the situation is a little different.  The ISO/ASTM 52900 is the replacement standard for the ASTM F2792, which has been cancelled.  As such, it signals a convergence of interests by the international standardization community for additive manufacturing.

ISO/ASTM 52900 of course contains a number of pages of straight-forward definitions.  However, users of the standard will be pleased to find the inclusion of an Annex that describes the basic principles of additive manufacturing.  It’s a five page review that provides you with a number of figures representing the various stages the process involves.  These figures cover the principles for both single step (metallic materials, polymer materials, and ceramic materials) and multistep processing.

Those of you interested in additive manufacturing will also want to know that two additional ISO/ASTM standards are available on this topic:  ISO/ASTM 52915, “Standard specification for Additive Manufacturing File format (AMF) Version 1.1,” and ISO/ASTM 52921, “Standard Terminology for Additive Manufacturing-Coordinate Systems and Test Methodologies.”

Now to get your copies of these publications.  Of course, you can always search and order at the Document Center Inc. webstore, www.document-center.com.  Since we’ve been an authorized distributor of both ISO and ASTM standards since the 1980’s, we’re a trusted source for standards.  Here’s the direct link to the order page for ISO/ASTM 52900.

Many of our customers are choosing our Standards Online multi-user access subscription service to provide their entire company with access to these types of publications.  If you’re interested in learning more, or just have any of the many questions the use of standards generates, get in touch with us!  You can reach our staff by phone (650-591-7600) or email (info@document-center.com).  Make us your Standards Experts.
