New AMS 2404 Revision G for Electroless Nickel Plating

There’s a few standards that are essential to the plating industry, and AMS 2404 is one of those standards.  It is the preferred replacement for the AMS-C-26074 (formerly MIL-C-26074) and is one of Document Center’s best selling plating standards.   It has just been revised, so if you use AMS 2404 you’ll want to get a copy of the new Revision G.

Titled “Plating, Electroless Nickel,” the update is the result of the usual 5 year review, so common at many of our U.S. standards developing organizations.  The changes modify the technical requirements for stress relief of steels prior to plating.  You’ll be pleased to note that SAE has provided the user with bold black lines in the margins of this document to identify the sections where changes were made.

The standard provides information on the requirements for electroless nickel deposited on a variety of materials.  It usually has been used for intricate shapes and to improve wear and/or corrosion resistance.  It also can help with improving the solderability on or for different materials as well.

You’ll find information on 4 classes of plating:

  • Class 1 – no post plating thermal treatment needed (except for hydrogen embrittlement relief)
  • Class 2 – Thermal treatment to 450 degrees F or above
  • Class 3 – Thermal treatment to 375 degrees F or above
  • Class 4 – Thermal treatment to 250 degrees F or above

Direction is giving in the document on how to relate this standard with the old AMS C 26074.  For example, if the old standard called out Grade B, corrosion resistance testing does not apply.
