AMS QQ-N-290, “Nickel Plating (Electrodeposited),” has been updated. The new Revision C is available in paper format and for pdf download from Document Center Inc., an authorized distributor of the SAE Standards. This is the first revision of the standard since Revision B from 2009.
What is the AMS QQ-N-290? It is the successor document to the old Federal Specification QQ-N-290, of the same title. With Mil-Spec reform in the mid 1990’s, SAE took over the administration of a number of government specs and standards. This is one of those documents.
What does the AMS QQ-N-290 C cover? It provides the requirements for electrodeposited nickel plating typically used on steel, copper and copper alloys, and zinc and zinc alloys. However, other applications are also covered.
What are the changes in the new Revision C for AMS QQ-N-290? SAE standards are reviewed every five years. During the latest review for AMS QQ-N-290, a number of items surfaced that were out-of-date. So updates have been made to referenced documents and to processes that need to be brought into line with current government and industry specifications, including other AMS standards. Other updates and changes have been made in the area of hydrogen embrittlement prevention.
