New EN 61000-4-5 2014 Edition

EN 61000-4-5, “Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Testing and measurement techniques. Surge immunity test,” has just been revised.  The new 2014 Edition brings the document back in line with the IEC 61000-4-5 (which was revised in May).  You can get your copy of the new update now from Document Center Inc.

What does this standard cover?  It’s used for defining the requirements and tests for the immunity of electronic and electric equipment to unidirectional surges from over-voltages from switches and lightning.  You’ll get a range of test levels, along with the appropriate test equipment, test setups, and test procedures for compliance.  However, direct lightning strikes are not part of the document.

Since this is an adoption of an IEC standard, the same new material in the IEC edition is present in the EN one as well.  Most changes can be found in the Annexes.  Let’s review them:

  • Annex A has been modified to fully address the issue of surge test for ports connected to outside telecommunication lines,
  • Annex E was added for the mathematical modelling of surge waveforms,
  • New Annex F covers measurement uncertainty,
  • There’s a new Annex G on calibrating impulse measuring systems,
  • And Annex H was added for coupling/decoupling surges to lines rated above 200 A.

What’s in the EN edition that you won’t find in the IEC original?  In the EN forward, you’ll find an endorsement notice.  This notice provides you with the EN equivalents for the IEC documents that are referenced in the Bibliography.  You’ll also find administrative information on when the nations in the EU must adopt this standard and when conflicting or duplicate information needs to be withdrawn.  Additionally, there is a normative (for your information only) Annex ZA.  It refers to referenced documents within the text of the standard.
