New IEEE 802 2014 Edition updates LAN Standard

The IEEE 802 and it’s series of companion standards are the basis for all local area networks (LANs), as well as metropolitan area networks (MANs).  As the overview document, IEEE 802 provides the foundation for the use of the many documents in the series.  The new 2014 Edition, titled “IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks: Overview and Architecture,” is the first major re-write of the standard since 2001.  It not only replaces the previous edition, but also IEEE 802a and IEEE 802b, two amending documents for the IEEE 802.

In the new revision, you’ll find new information about physical layer addressing and universal addressing.  There’s information about the IEEE Registration Authority (RA) as well.  And the document has been extensively rewritten to update the information on protocol identification using the EtherType.

The referenced documents section has also been updated to reflect the cancellation of some of the series documents.  This includes IEEE 802.5 and IEEE 802.2.  Another change is the addition of wireless standards.  Your Annex D provides you with a complete list of the IEEE 802 series itself, so you can easily see what current standards address the wide variety of interfaces, security issues, and types of networks used by LANs and MANs.

You’ll also be pleased to know that there’s a new Annex B with specific reference models for the IEEE 802 standards.  This section goes through a variety of standards in the series, providing you with basic information on both the data link layer and the physical layer, as well as distribution system models, etc., as appropriate.  You’ll also find a new Annex C in this edition, which gives you examples of bit ordering for addresses.

Networking has undergone significant changes since 2001.  This new edition of the IEEE 802 provides an overview that takes these many changes into account.  You’ll want a copy, and you can purchase your authorized edition from Document Center Inc.  Go to our webstore at www.document-center.com.  You’ll be able to order the document in paper format or for pdf download.  It comes with our superior notification service, so you’ll always be updated when the document is modified or revised.
