ISO 13688, 2nd Edition, “Protective clothing – General requirements,” has just been released. This International Standard’s 2013 update provides performance requirements for ergonomics, sizes, compatibility and marking of protective clothing. It also provides the details of the information that a manufacturer of protective clothing should supply with the product.
It is not intended to be used alone. It is a companion document that is used in conjunction with other standards that specify protective performance in detail.
The ISO 13688 2013 Edition cancels and replaces the 1st Edition from 1998. It has technical revisions as follows:
- The scope has a statement and pictogram showing how the standard is used with other documentation.
- The definition section has been expanded.
- Clause 4 has been divided into subsections.
- Subclause 5.2 has been removed.
- Subclause 5.3 has been renamed and modified, with strengthened provisions regarding dimensional changes due to cleaning.
- Clause 6 has been modified.
- Subclause 7.2 has been amended to include qualification labeling for industrial laundry care.
- Annexes A, B, C and F have been added, resulting in the renumbering of the original Annexes A and B.
The ISO 13688 has been adopted by the European Union as EN ISO 13688 as a replacement for EN 340, which is now obsolete. You can purchase the official English language edition of the EN adoption as BS EN ISO 13688 from Document Center Inc. if you prefer that edition.
