New ISO 6579-1 adopted as EN ISO 6579-1 – Detection of Salmonella

EN ISO 6579-1, Microbiology of the food chain. Horizontal method for the detection, enumeration and serotyping of Salmonella. Detection of Salmonella spp., has just been released.  It is the European adoption of ISO 6579-1 which was issued in February.  The new standard replaces the EN ISO 6579 and the EN ISO 6785.  The ISO 6579-1 source document is complimented by Parts 2 and 3.

Protection of the food chain is an international issue.  So the detection of Salmonella is of concern to a wide variety of jurisdictions.  The EN ISO 6579-1 is specifically for Europe.  This new release expands the scope of the earlier EN ISO 6579.  This means there are a number of additional factors included in the new document that were not previous addressed.

Of course, the information in the EN ISO 6579 is incorporated into the EN ISO 6579-1.  What other changes have been made?  The committee directs your attention to the following:

  • The scope has been expanded to include samples from the primary production stage.
  • Annex D describes the detection of Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi.
  • Whenever possible, reference to ISO 6887 has been used for descriptions of preparations of initial suspensions.
  • The temperature range for incubation of non-selective media has been extended.
  • Choices are now available for selective enrichment.
  • In order to obtain well-isolated colonies after incubation, the inoculation of the isolation medium has become less prescriptive.
  • You can now perform the tests on only one suspect colony for confirmation.
  • Rules for performing biochemical confirmation directly on a suspect, well-isolated colony from the selective plating medium have changed.
  • Two confirmation tests have become optional and one confirmation test has been deleted.
  • Serological confirmation (to serogroup level) is described.
  • Table 1 has been improved.
  • Annex B now includes performance testing for the quality assurance of the culture media.
  • Performance characteristics of MSRV have been added to Annex C.

FYI:  There are an additional 2 Parts for the ISO 6579 series.  These include Part 2, Part 2: Enumeration by a miniaturized most probable number technique, and Part 3, Part 3: Guidelines for serotyping of Salmonella spp.
