New ISO/TR 31004 offers Guidance on Risk Management

To help you implement ISO 31000 on Risk Management, ISO has released a new publication.  This new ISO/TR 31004, “Risk management – Guidance for the implementation of ISO 31000,” is meant to help folks with existing risk management systems migrate over to the ISO 31000 methodology.  And it also is meant to help integrate risk management with other management processes.  It’s a technical report and can be beneficial even for teachers and students, legislators, and regulators.

There’s an effort afoot in the standards community to develop a consistent framework for all of the management standardization efforts.  Since ISO 31000 is the basis for a number of sector-specific risk management standards (like ISO 14971 and ISO 17666), developing a consistent management approach is the goal.

And face it, risk management is an on-going concern in many organizations.  You’ve got to correctly identify your risks and mitigate the possible negative effects.

ISO 31000 was developed to provide a systematic way of attacking the problem.  The ISO/TR 31004 supplements this effort by helping you compare your current practices with ISO 31000 itself.  It shows you how to develop and execute a transition plan.  You’ll get help in maintaining your ISO 31000 program as well, to provide the continuous improvement so necessary to these types of management schemes.

You’ll also be pleased to find five informative Annexes:

  • Underlying concepts and principles
  • Application of ISO 31000 principles
  • How to express mandate and commitment
  • Monitoring and review
  • Integrating risk management within a management system.

Each annex has a number of “Practical Help” boxes with questions you can ask to clarify your direction.  In the Annexes that review the various principles, there is a following review of how to actually apply that principle!

If risk management is your responsibility, you should find this technical report to be of real assistance in reviewing and refining your processes.  You can purchase the ISO/TR 31004 and all current ISO standards at Document Center’s web store, www.document-center.com.  We also have many obsolete editions available.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re here to help you run your business as effectively and as safely as possible.
