New MIL-DTL-917 replaces MIL-E-917

It’s been 21 years since the MIL-E-917 has been updated.  Now there’s a new Revision F and with this release the document has been renumber MIL-DTL-917.  Still titled “Electric Power Equipment, Basic Requirements for,” the document is a mainstay of the DoD purchasing system.  You’ll want to get your copy of this new 100 page document to meet the requirements for the design, materials and construction of naval shipboard electric power equipment.  The specification is also called out in other defense contracts as well.

After the usual scope and referenced documents clauses, this new revision is divided into two main sections.  The first is the requirements section, providing you with concrete details of such topics as grounding, noise reduction, fastening devices, and so on.  Next, Section 4 covers verification – the tests that your equipment will be expected to pass.

The document finishes up with a short section on packaging and then a Section 6 with various notes.  You’ll also find an Appendix A on the procedure for insulation suitability tests.

I want to warn you:  This new Revision F is a complete update of your specification.  While the material covered remains consistent in scope, the layout and organization of the material is significantly revised.

If you use this specification, you’ll want a copy of the new edition.  Consider using Document Center for your purchase.  You can order the document for delivery in paper format, as a pdf download, or as part of our Standards Online multi-user access subscription service.  You’ll be notified of any future changes to the document.  And as a Document Center customer, you can review your orders and the status of the documents you use online at any time by logging into our site, www.document-center.com.
