New MIL-PRF-61002 amendment for Bar Coding Labels

MIL-PRF-61002 Revision B,”Labels, Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive, for Bar Coding,” has been modified by the addition of Amendment 2.  The new interfiled  edition is available in either paper format or pdf download.  The new update replaces the previous release from June 2009, which included the Revision B plus Amendment 1.

MIL-PRF-61002 covers the requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive labels for use in the implementation of bar code marking/reading operations for military contract work.  It defines the types, grades, styles and compositions that can be specified in DoD orders.  It is a performance specification, outlining performance and durability requirements for pressure sensitive labels in various climatic environments.

Primary changes to the document include the addition of 5 new referenced standards:

  • ASTM D6252/D6252M, Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Label Stocks at a 90° Angle
  • ASTM G154, Standard Practice for Operating Fluorescent Ultraviolet (UV) Lamp Apparatus for Exposure of Nonmetallic Materials
  • ASTM G195, Standard Guide for Conducting Wear Tests Using a Rotary Platform, Double-Head Abraser
  • ISO 15394, Packaging – Bar Code and Two-Dimensional Symbols for Shipping, Transport and Receiving Labels
  • ANSI MH10.8.1, Automatic Identification and Data Capture Techniques Used in Shipping, Receiving and Transport Applications

The newly added standards appear in a number of paragraphs, providing more choices than the previously referenced MIL-STD-130 and ASTM D3611.  Also you’ll find requirements making use of the added new Standards in Section 4 on verification, the Notes for Table 2, and the application examples Section 6.9.

Identifying these changes is relatively easy, as there are black lines in the margins where the text has been affected by the new Amendment 2 material.

As any Government Contractor will tell you, one of the most irritating rejections of material is when the labeling of a given shipment is not correct.  Use of the correct bar codes, labels, and the proper location of same can save any supplier both time and money, as well as improve the Accounts Receivable collection cycle.
