The standard specifically covers pallets of military supplies, 40 by 48-inches, that can be used for unit loading. There are various classes, types and styles used for this purpose (defined in ANSI MH1, Part 9.) The Change Notice 1 modifies many sections of the standard, all of which are clearly marked by dark lines in the margins of the pages. This means that the MIL-STD-147 Revision E is now obsolete.
The standard shows you what kinds of pallets are acceptable for this application, as well as a number of scenarios of how to use them in both strapped and unstrapped configurations. You’ll appreciate the figures that are used to support the various clauses in this regards.
The Appendixes Section is also quite extensive. You’ll get supporting information on the various classifications of commodities and containers, load pattern selections, containers for modular packaging, and so on. An index is provided at the end of the standard so that you can easily look up a number of topics that would not be clear from the table of contents information.
Why did I say MIL-STD-147 has a checkered history? The standard was actually cancelled in 1996 and only reinstated with the release of Revision E in 2008.
