New ASME B16.34 2013 Edition on Valves can be Ordered Now

ASME B16.34 – 2013 Edition, “Valves — Flanged, Threaded, and Welding End,” is going to be released from the printers at the end of the month and can be ordered now from Document Center Inc. Part of ASME’s piping safety standards set, the new 2013 Edition replaces the previous 2009 Edition (now obsolete).  FYI: ASME B16.34 also superseded the old MIL-V-18634.

This Standard applies to new construction. You’ll find tables and appendices for pressure-temperature ratings and the method of computation in this standard.  Also covered are dimensions, tolerances, materials, nondestructive examination requirements, testing, and marking for cast, forged, and fabricated flanged, threaded, and welding end and wafer or flangeless valves of steel, nickel-base alloys, and other alloys.

Wafer or flangeless valves, bolted or through-bolt types, that are installed between flanges or against a flange are treated as flanged-end valves. Alternative rules for NPS 2½ and smaller valves are given in Mandatory Appendix V.

The Mandatory Appendices  include Procedure and Acceptance Standards for Radiography Examination, Magnetic Particle Examination, Liquid Penetrant Examination, and Ultrasonic Examination.

ASME B16.34 is used by manufacturers, owners, employers, users and others concerned with the specification, buying, maintenance, training and safe use of valves with pressure equipment, plus all potential governing entities.  Why?  Because it helps users comply with applicable regulations within their jurisdictions, while achieving the operational, cost and safety benefits to be gained from the many industry best-practices included in the standard.

All current and many obsolete editions of ASME standards can be purchased from Document Center Inc. at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re the Standards Experts and can assist you with your conformance requirements.

Three European and One International Standard on Energy Audits

What with global warming and the push to reduce carbon footprints, we’re seeing a recent flurry of activity in the energy auditing arena.  There are currently three new European Standards and a new ISO Standard on Energy Audits.  Since they’re all available at Document Center Inc., I’ll discuss each one separately:

  1. BS-EN-16247-1:2012Energy audits. General requirements.  This European Standard defines the attributes of a good quality energy audit. It states the requirements for energy audits and corresponding obligations within the energy auditing process. It recognizes that there are differences in approach to energy auditing in terms of scope, aims and thoroughness, but seeks to harmonize common aspects of energy auditing in order to bring more clarity and transparency to the market for energy auditing services. The energy audit process is presented as a simple chronological sequence.  It applies to commercial, industrial, residential and public-sector organizations, but not individual homes.
  2. BS-EN-16231:2012Energy efficiency benchmarking methodology.  This new release specifies requirements and provides recommendations for energy efficiency bench-marking methodology. The purpose of energy efficiency bench-marking is to establish the relevant data and indicators on energy consumption, both technical and behavioral, qualitative and quantitative in comparing performance between or within entities.
  3. BS-EN-16212:2012Energy Efficiency and Savings Calculation, Top-down and Bottom-up Methods.    This standard provides a general approach for energy efficiency and energy savings calculations. The general approach is applicable for end user energy savings in buildings, cars, appliances, industrial processes, and so on.
  4. ISO 12655:2013, Energy performance of buildings — Presentation of measured energy use of buildings.  Written with a narrower focus, the standard sets out a consistent methodology to present energy use in buildings.  This is specified clearly with the energy usage, corresponding boundary and the energy data (presented with original energy carriers or equivalent energy).  You can use this standard for the presentation of energy use of civil buildings for data collection, metering, statistics, audit and analysis.

All BS EN and ISO standards are available at Document Center’s webstore, www.document-center.com.  FYI: Some territorial restrictions may apply.  If you prefer you can contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’ve been providing our customers with standards for over 30 years and can assist you with all your conformance requirements and questions.

Finding Replacement Standards for Obsolete and Withdrawn Documents

It’s not an uncommon problem — You discover that a standard you use is obsolete.  How do you find the replacement standards?

Here at Document Center, I had a call yesterday from a customer who went to the ANSI webstore and was unable to find a standard there.  Turns out there’s a lot of standards that are not on the ANSI website.  The customer was perplexed and didn’t know what to do.  This is a situation that many standards users find themselves in — They have a document that they have been using or is called out in a contract or documentation and “poof!” it seems to have disappeared.

Well, I’m glad the customer gave us a call, because our system is set up to answer just this very question!  The first thing I did was check in our database and that’s when I found the source of the problem.  The standard (ANSI B18.17) was withdrawn in 1993 and ANSI does not track these obsolete documents.  Of course, the Document Center database does and you can find it by searching for ANSI B18.17 or just B18.17.

How did I help this person find a replacement standard?  Because ANSI B18.17 was cancelled without replacement, we had to do a search for a document that would take it’s place rather than follow the advice of the source organization.  So we put “wing nut” in the search field and came up with plenty of choices.  “There it is!” said my customer, looking at the ASME B18.6.9.

There are other tools on our website as well, so here’s some additional tips:

When you look on the Document Center website, if an obsolete standard has a notation “See the following:” use the link provided to find the replacement standard.

You can also look at the bottom of the bibliographic record of the obsolete standard.  If there’s a link “To find similar standards by…” try the link.  It will take you to documents that are in the same ICS Code or FSC Classification, or even the same ASTM collection volume.  You’ll use that list to find an appropriate replacement standard.

Or you can also do what we did:  Search for a topic or portion of the title.  You’ll get a results page with similar standards to choose from.

Still having trouble?  Give us a call!  As our customer said, “I don’t know why I bother with other services when Document Center has all the information I need!”  You can get in touch with us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  And of course our webstore www.document-center.com has information on over 500,000 different standards from over 350 different publishers.

ASTM E18 2012 just released – Standard Test Methods for Rockwell Hardness of Metallic Materials

There’s a new ASTM E18-12, “Standard Test Methods for Rockwell Hardness of Metallic Materials,” and it’s available now from Document Center Inc. in either paper or pdf format.  This is one of our best selling standards, providing customers with the requirements for Rockwell hardness machines and the procedures for performing Rockwell hardness tests.

The new revision replaces the previous ASTM E18-11 Edition, which is now obsolete.  Three sections have been revised:  A1.4.7.2, A1.4.9.1, and Table A1.3.  These reflect a change in the difference in hardness between the standardized test blocks.

The standard also has a series of Annexes and Appendices that provide additional information, and more information on each of those can be found on the bibliographic page for ASTM E18 on our website.

All current and many obsolete ASTM standards can be purchased on the Document Center website, www.document-center.com.  If you need editions released before 1/1/2000, this is a good place to look for them.  Should you need additional information, you can always get in touch with us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Our staff is here to help you with all your conformance documentation requirements and questions.

MIL-I-46058C Validated – Insulating Compound, Electrical (for Coating Printed Circuit Assemblies)

MIL-I-46058 Revision C, “Insulating Compound, Electrical (for Coating Printed Circuit Assemblies),” has been validated and it’s available now from Document Center Inc. in either paper or pdf format.  The validation notice 2 confirms that Revision C with Amendment 7 is still valid for use by the Department of Defense and it’s contractors.

The specification itself cover conformal coatings that are suitable for application to printed circuit assemblies by dipping, brushing, spraying, or vacuum deposition.  MIL-I-46058C was inactivated in November, 1998, which means that it should only be used for replacement purposes, not for new design.  The validation notice 2 does not change that status in any way.

Mil Specs and Standards can be purchased from Document Center Inc. at our website, www.document-center.com.  The benefit of using Document Center is that we monitor the documents you purchase and notify you when they are updated.  Our notification service is used by our customers as part of their quality systems to assure they are using only the most up-to-date documentation.

New NFPA 495 2013 Edition: Explosive Materials Code

There’s a new NFPA 495 2013 Edition, “Explosive Materials Code,” and it’s available now from Document Center Inc.  This code  applies to the manufacture, transportation, storage, sale, and use of explosive materials.

NFPA 495 identifies reasonable levels of safety for explosive materials like blasting agents, water gel and emulsion materials, smokeless propellants, black powder propellants, and small arms ammunition. But it does not apply to transportation of such material when used for military purposes or when under jurisdiction of the federal government.

This is the first revision since 2010 and it’s expected to remain current until 2017.  What’s new?  The 2013 Edition provides a major re-write of the ground vibration chapter, including:

  • Additional requirements pertaining to use of seismographs
  • An expanded Air Overpressure section that adds in a maximum allowable limit of air overpressure, 133 dB

This important Code is essential for explosives manufacturers, small arms manufacturers, distributors, or retailers, or enforcement personnel such as fire and building officials.

You can purchase all current NFPA standards and codes from us at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We carry all the documents you need to meet your compliance requirements.

New BS-EN-61326-1 2013 Edition – EMC Requirements for Electrical Equipment

There’s a new BS-EN-61326-1 2013 Edition, “Electrical equipment for measurement, control and laboratory use. EMC requirements. General requirements,” and it’s available now from Document Center Inc.  It is the official English language edition of  EN 61326-1, the European adoption of IEC 61326-1 Edition 2.0.

This document specifies requirements for immunity and emissions regarding electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for electrical equipment, operating from a supply or battery of less than 1 000 V a.c. or 1 500 V d.c. or from the circuit being measured.  Equipment covered is intended for professional, industrial-process, industrial-manufacturing and educational use.

BS-EN-61326-1:2013 is a technical revision of the BS-EN-61326-1:2006 Edition. The significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition are:
– the immunity test levels and performance criteria have been reviewed;
– requirements for portable test and measurement equipment have been clarified and amended;
– the description of the electromagnetic environments has been improved.

For now, it’s still OK to continue to use the BS-EN-61326-1 2006 Edition, as it remains “current” even though it is replaced by the new 2013 Edition.

New Interpretation Sheet released for IEC 61010-1

IEC 61010-1, “Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use – Part 1: General requirements,” Edition 3.0 has just had an Interpretation Sheet released and it’s available now from Document Center Inc.  The new 2-page addition sheds light on a question that has been raised by users of the standard.

In this case, IEC 61010-1:2010 contains a requirement in Section 6.8.3.1 pertaining to voltage testers for type tests.  The specification for the generator to supply a power of at least 500 VA is at question.

The interpretation details the various issues that this requirement has raised.  Then, it provides guidance from the committee to help the user best understand how to interpret the standard.

Interpretation notices don’t appear very often for IEC standards, but it is one successful way that users of an IEC standard can get questions answered in a definitive manner.

FYI:  This particular interpretation sheet is two pages long — One page for the English language Edition and one for the French!

Consider using Document Center for all your standards needs.  Where else can you get the kind of information on standards you need in order to make the best purchasing decisions for your company?  You can order at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or you can always order or ask questions via phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We love to get your questions and to help you with the many issues that arise from the use of these technical documents.

New NAS 523 Revision 30 released – Fastener Code

There’s a new Standard Practice NAS 523, “Fastener Code,” 30th Revision dated 1/31/2013 and you can buy it now from Document Center Inc.  The 48-page National Aerospace Standard includes all types of fasteners where installation creates a permanent deformation that requires the destruction of the fastener to remove it.

These fasteners are commonly called rivets.  Staples or wire stitching are not included in the code.   The symbol for these fasteners include a single cross whose intersection is at the location of the fastener.  If there’s not enough space, the symbol can be located off to the side with the location of the fastener indicated by an arrow.

The bulk of the standard is an Alphabetical part number listing and an Alphabetical code listing.

In order to determine the changes of the new Revision 30 from the previous NAS 523 Revision 29, just take a look at the table at the bottom of page 1.  It contains a listing of revised and deleted sheets.
