New SAE AS 6174 on Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel

SAE Committee G-21 on Counterfeit Materiel has been busy lately and has just released the new SAE AS 6174, “Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel.”  It’s available from Document Center Inc. now.

AS 6174 2012 Edition standardizes practices to:

a. maximize availability of authentic materiel (made from the proper materials using the proper processes with required testing,)

b. procure materiel from reliable sources,

c. assure authenticity and conformance of procured materiel

d. control materiel identified as counterfeit, and

e. report counterfeit materiel to other potential users and government investigative authorities.

This aerospace standard is part of an on-going standards developing effort to provide guidance for industry on this topic.  Other standards of interest are: AS 5553, “Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition,” ARP 6178, “Fraudulent/Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Tool for Risk Assessment of Distributors,” GEIA TB-0003, “Counterfeit Parts and Materials Risk Mitigation,” ASTM F1448, “Standard Guide for Selection of Security Technology for Protection Against Counterfeiting, Alteration, Diversion, Duplication, Simulation, and Substitution (CADDSS) of Products or Documents,” and IEC 62668-1, “Process management for avionics – Counterfeit prevention – Part 1: Avoiding the use of counterfeit, fraudulent and recycled electronic components.”

New ASME Y14.41 2012 Edition, Digital Product Definition Data Practices, due next month!

ASME has announced a new 2012 Edition of ASME Y14.41, “Digital Product Definition Data Practices,” and it will be available from Document Center Inc. when it is released in June.  3D modeling has come into its own and ASME Y14.41 sets the rules, extending ASME Y14.5 into the 3D world.

The development of this National Standard was initiated at the request of industry and the U.S. Government.

It establishes requirements, and references documents applicable to the preparation and revision of digital product definition data, referred to as data sets. ASME Y14.41 defines the exceptions and additional requirements to existing ASME standards for using product definition data sets or drawings in 3D digital format. This standard supports two methods of application: model only, and model and drawing in digital format.

The structure of the standard begins with the requirements common to both methods (model only, and model and drawing in digital format), and then branches to the other sections that have differing requirements for each method.

It also provides a guide for the many computer aided design (CAD) software packages to develop better modeling and annotation practices for CAD and engineering disciplines.

New AIAG CQI-12 2012 Edition, Special Process: Coating System Assessment

AIAG has just released the new 2012 Edition of CQI-12, “Special Process: Coating System Assessment,” and it’s available from Document Center Inc. now.  This new revision of the manual includes a CD which contains the coating system assessment worksheets.  It replaces the previous 2007 Edition.

The goal of AIAG CQI-12 is the development of a coating management system for the automotive industry that provides for continual improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and the reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain.

The CSA (Coating System Assessment) can be used to assess an organization’s ability to meet the requirements in this standard, as well as customer, regulatory, and the organizati0n’s own requirements. The CSA can also be used  between an organization and its suppliers.

AIAG standards are created to support the automotive industry.  However, many of their documents have widespread appeal for the manufacturing sector in general.  Some examples are the FMEA, the MSA, and the APQP.

New BS EN 482 2012 Edition released for Workplace exposure, General requirements for the performance of procedures for the measurement of chemical agents

BS EN 482 2012 Edition has just been released and is now available from Document Center Inc.  The new revsion, titled “Workplace exposure. General requirements for the performance of procedures for the measurement of chemical agents,” specifies general performance requirements for procedures for the determination of the concentration of chemical agents in workplace atmospheres as required by the Chemical Agents Directive 98/24/EC.

These requirements apply to all measuring procedures, irrespective of the physical form of the chemical agent (gas, vapour, airborne particles), the sampling method and the analytical method used. This European Standard is applicable to all steps of a measuring procedure, measuring procedures with separate sampling and analysis steps, and direct-reading devices.

The 24-page BS EN 482:2012 replaces the previous (now obsolete) 2006 Edition.  It is the official English language edition of EN 482:2012.  Since the EN standards are not available as stand-alone publications, but only as re-publications as adopted by each country in the European Union, this is normally how we sell the standard at Document Center Inc.

With all the interest in alternative fuel automobiles, ISO has been busy updating the ISO 15500 series on Road vehicles — Compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel system components.  The new 2012 Editions for this series are available now from Document Center Inc.

The ISO 15500 series covers compressed natural gas fuel system components, intended for use on the types of motor vehicles as defined in ISO 3833, “Road vehicles – Types – Terms and definitions.”

It is applicable to vehicles using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2 (mono-fuel, bi-fuel or dual-fuel applications).  It is not applicable to the following:
a) liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel system components located upstream of, and including, the vaporizer;
b) fuel containers;
c) stationary gas engines;
d) container mounting hardware;
e) electronic fuel management;
f) refuelling receptacles.

MIL-STD-740 Revision B canceled for Airborne and Structureborne Noise Measurements and Acceptance Criteria of Shipboard Equipment

MIL-STD-740B, “Airborne and Structureborne Noise Measurements and Acceptance Criteria of Shipboard Equipment,” has recently been canceled.  The standard covered acceptable instrumentation and procedures for the measurement and acceptance criteria for airborne and structural noise of Naval shipboard equipment.  It has been replaced by three other standards, all of which are available from Document Center Inc. now.

MIL-STD-740-1, “Airborne Sound Measurements and Acceptance Criteria of Shipboard Equipment,” MIL-STD-740-2, “Structureborne Vibratory Acceleration Measurements and Acceptance Criteria of Shipboard Equipment,” and the “Shipboard Equipment Noise” Requirement of MIL-STD-1474, “Noise Limits,” supersede MIL-STD-740.

Standards on acceptable noise levels provide criteria for designing materiel that:

a. minimize noise induced hearing loss,
b. permit acceptable speech communication in a noisy environment,
c. minimize aural detection by an enemy,
d. minimize community annoyance, and
e. provide acceptable habitability of personnel quarters.

New ASTM A580/A580M 2012 Edition, Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Wire

ASTM A580/A580M, 2012 Edition, “Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Wire,” has just been released and is now available from Document Center Inc.  The document was editorially corrected within weeks, so that the new correct edition is the ASTM A580/A580M-12(e1) Edition.

This specification covers stainless steel wire, except the free-machining types. It includes round, square, octagon, hexagon, and shape wire in coils only for the more commonly used types of stainless steels for general corrosion resistance and high-temperature service.

ASTM A580/A580M steel specimens undergo the following conditions: (1) annealed as a final heat treatment; (2) cold worked to higher strength; (3) heat treated to an intermediate temper; or (4) heat treated to a hard temper by austenitizing, quenching, and tempering at a relatively low temperature.  The materials are cold drawn, annealed, and pickled.

The steel wires are expected to conform to the required chemical compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, nitrogen, and other elements such as niobium , vanadium, copper, tantalum, titanium and cobalt as defined in Table 1.

Table 2 covers mechanical test requirements that verify that the steel specimens conform to the required values of tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. The martensitic grades conform to the required values of hardness after heat treatment.

The original changes to the standard include the addition of new grades to both table 1 and table 2.  The editorial change that followed corrected Table 2 only.

New MIL-PRF-85337 Revision B replaces MIL-M-85337, Manuals, Technical: Quality Assurance Program; Requirements for

MIL-PRF-85337 Revision B, “Manuals, Technical: Quality Assurance Program; Requirements for,” has just been released and is now available from Document Center Inc.  The new 62 page edition replaces the now obsolete MIL-M-85337 Revision A, signifying the recognition that the document is a performance based specification.

This specification establishes technical manual quality assurance (TMQA) requirements necessary to ensure the adequacy and accuracy of technical manual (TM) content through a coordinated contractor and Government program.  Unless otherwise specified, the quality assurance (QA) requirements included in this specification apply to both printed/Portable Document Format (PDF) technical manuals and Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs).

Procedures are established for the development and implementation of a contractor program encompassing the conduct of TMQA program reviews, quality reviews, in-process reviews, adequacy reviews, validation, and verification requirements.

The specification MIL PRF 85337 applies to all TM procurements when referenced in a U.S. military contract or other contractual document.

New IEC 60601-2-3 Edition 3.0 released for Medical electrical equipment – Part 2-3: Particular requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of short-wave therapy equipment

IEC 60601-2-3 , “Medical electrical equipment – Part 2-3: Particular requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of short-wave therapy equipment,” has just been revised and the new Edition 3.0 is available from Document Center Inc.  The 46-page IEC 60601-2-3:2012 specifies the requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of short-wave therapy equipment.

Short-wave therapy equipment are defined as medical equipment for the therapeutic treatment of a patient by exposure to electric or magnetic fields produced in the frequency range of more than 13 MHz but not exceeding 45 MHz. Equipment having a rated output power not exceeding 10 W are exempted from certain requirements of this standard.

There is also an informative Annex AA which provides a “particular guidance and rationale” section giving some explanatory notes on specific sections.  The standard states, “It is considered that a knowledge of the reasons for these requirements will not only facilitate the proper application of the standard but will, in due course, expedite any revision necessitated by changes in clinical practice or as a result of developments in technology.”  The annex is not a requirement of the standard.

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition of IEC 60601-2-3 published in 1991 and its amendment 1 published in 1998.  It constitutes a technical revision and has been aligned with IEC 60601-1:2005.

New IEEE 802.11 2012 Edition for Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) Specifications

IEEE 802.11, “IEEE Standard for Information technology – Telecommunications and information exchange between systems Local and metropolitan area networks – Specific requirements Part 11: Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) Specifications,” has just been updated and the new 2012 Edition is now available from Document Center Inc.  This new 2,793-page standard can be purchased in either paper or pdf format.

The scope of this standard is to define one medium access control (MAC) and several physical layer (PHY) specifications for wireless connectivity for fixed, portable, and moving stations (STAs) within a local area.

It provides the framework for wireless connectivity for fixed, portable, and moving stations within a local area.  IEEE Std 802.11 also gives regulatory bodies a means of standardizing access to one or more frequency bands for the purpose of local area communication.

The new revision specifies technical corrections and clarifications to IEEE Std 802.11 for wireless local area networks (WLANS) as well as enhancements to the existing medium access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) functions. It also incorporates Amendments 1 to 10 published from 2008 to 2011.
