The new ANSI/ASSE A10.5 2013 Edition, “Safety Requirements for Material Hoists,” has been released and is now available from Document Center Inc. in either paper or pdf format. This standard defines safety requirements for the use and operation of material hoists used in construction.
ANSI A10.5 applies to material hoists used to raise or lower materials during construction, alteration or demolition. It is not applicable to the temporary use of permanently installed personnel elevators as material hoists.
No guidance is given in the new standard itself regarding changes from the previous issue. However, the new 2013 Edition does replace the previous ANSI/ASSE A10.5-2006 Edition, which is now obsolete.
FYI: The use of the ANSI/ASSE designation means that the standard was developed by ASSE, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and adopted by ANSI as an American National Standard.
