RR-W-410, “Wire Rope and Strand,” has been updated. The new Revision H cancels and replaces the previous Revision G from June 2010. The new update for this Federal Specification can be procured in both paper format and for pdf download from Document Center Inc. It is used in many organizations across the U.S. — both for government contract work and general specifications for the product.
Federal specifications like RR-W-410 are written and maintained to provide the requirements for products purchased by the federal government. They may not include all types and classes that are in commercial use, but they certainly provide you with the details of items called out in U.S. government contracts.
In this case, the specification covers wire ropes and wire seizing strands, with information on the types, classes, constructions and sizes required. First comes a detailed list of all the wire rope types and sizes that are addressed in this document. Next general requirements are reviewed. This Clause 3 is lengthy, including things like the types of materials that can be used, workmanship, tensile strengths, and so on. Clause 4 gives you the quality assurance requirements you’ll need to meet. Packaging requirements are reviewed in Clause 5. Clause 6 is a notes section. It does tell you that the changes in the new Revision H are extensive, so there are no black lines in the margins to help you identify them.
The second half of the RR-W-410 is devoted to the various tables that are included to help you meet the exact dimensional requirements for the various types of wire ropes. You’ll also find a series of figures in this part of the publication that are cross-sections of various types of wire rope, again to insure that you understand exactly how each type should be configured.
