AMS 2485 Updated – Black Oxide Coating

AMS 2485, “Coating, Black Oxide,” has just been updated.  This is one of the most popular plating specs, used by companies around the world.  The new Revision L replaces AMS 2485K from 2008.  The spec has actually be in use since 1948.

This Aerospace Material Specification covers the black oxide coatings used on various parts.  This type of coating improves the anti-chafing and anti-friction properties of carbon and low-alloy steel parts.  This means that it is used for sliding or bearing surfaces.  It also provides a finish coat that can retain an oil film, important in many applications.

Sometimes the changes to these types of plating specs are fairly minor in nature.  Not so with the AMS 2485L.  While it was generated by a 5-year review of the specification, it still has a number of changes users will want to implement.

The first update is the Notice section.  This first introductory material covers ordering information — The information that the purchaser will want to provide to the plating processor.  The next section with updates is the one on the technical requirements.  Here clauses 3.1.2, 3.1.2.1, and 3.1.2.2 have been revised.  Finally in Section 5 (Quality Assurance Provisions) clauses 4.2.2.1, 4.3.3, and 4.4.2 have been updated as well.

As you can see, the previous edition of AMS 2485 was stable for a number of years.  However the new changes in Revision L affect both plating facilities and the customers who use them.  So if you’re in either category, you’ll need a copy of this updated publication.
