New ESD TR20.20 2016 Handbook is here!

ESD TR20.20, “ESD Association Technical Report – Handbook for the Development of an Electrostatic Discharge Control Program for the Protection of Electronic Parts, Assemblies and Equipment,” 2016 Edition has just been released.  This is the companion to ANSI/ESD S20.20 that many of you have been expecting!  The S20.20 was updated in 2014, but the TR20.20 handbook has only now been revised from the previous 2008 Edition.  But it’s been worth the wait!

Why use the ESD TR20.20?  If you or your organization needs to control ESD (electrostatic discharge) in your facility, this guide can be used for developing, implementing and monitoring your program in accordance with ANSI/ESD S20.20.  This is for manufacturing, processing, assembling, installing, packaging, labeling, servicing, testing, inspecting and other types of handling of electrical and electronic parts and assemblies.  These assemblies are those susceptible to damage by discharges greater than or equal to 100 volts.

The ANSI/ESD S20.20 is the commercial equivalent of the MIL-STD-1686, also on ESD control.  Like the MIL-HDBK-263 and it’s relationship to the military MIL-STD-1686, the TR20.20 gives you a thorough review of the specified ESD program.  However, in the TR20.20 there’s also information on the basics of electrostatic electricity, as well as general information on the 20.20 documents themselves.  So while the military series outlines your contractual requirements, the commercial documents focus completely on the ESD challenges and solutions for the user.

Another area where the commercial and military programs differ is in the TR20.20 (and S20.20) requirements for administrative oversight.  These include the need for developing an ESD control program, training plan, product qualification plan, and compliance verification plan.

You’ll find the ESD TR20.20 also contains lots of information on the various types of ESD control strategies, like the use of wrist straps, footwear and floor materials, and so on.  And other cleanroom features, like markings, hazards, and testing are also reviewed in depth.

If you’re using the new ANSI/ESD S20.20 and need additional guidance to make sure your cleanroom ESD plans and processes are adequate, you’ll want a copy of the new ESD TR20.20.  Choose an authorized distributor of the ESDA standards like Document Center Inc.  You can search for and order standards with confidence at our web store, www.document-center.com.  Here is a direct link to the order page for ESD TR20.20 for your convenience.

New ANSI/ESD S20.20 – ESD Protection for Electronic Parts

ANSI/ESD S20.20 is one of Document Center’s best-selling ESD protection standards.  Titled “Protection of Electrical and Electronic Parts, Assemblies and Equipment (Excluding Electrically Initiated Explosive Devices),” it’s just been updated with the release of a new 2014 Edition.  The standard is part of the ESD Association’s series on the Development of Electrostatic Discharge Control Programs.  It specifically addresses how to set up and maintain an ESD control program for dealing with electronic parts and assemblies susceptible to damage from discharges greater than or equal to 100 volts Human Body Model (HBM) or 200 volts Charged Device Model (CDM).

As a user of the ANSI/ESD S20.20, you’ll be wondering what the changes are in this new 2014 Edition.  Here’s a listing of the areas the committee has brought to your attention in the Annex D concluding material of the new revision:

  • the Scope Section has been expanded to add voltages to applicable  isolated charged conductors
  • Section 6.1 has been modified
  • in Section 7.1, Product Qualification has been added as an element of the ESD Control Program Plan, resulting in the addition of a new Section 7.3 and further renumbering of other Section 7 subsections
  • Section 8.2 has been updated
  • Section 8.3 now has additional requirements and Table 3 has been modified
  • Section 8.4 on packaging has been reworded for clarity
  • Annexes A and B have also been updated
