AS 6174/1 Issued – AS6174A Compliance Tool

AS 6174/1 has just been issued to help you meet the requirements of the AS 6174 Anti-Counterfeit standard.  The new 7-page slash sheet is titled Compliance Verification Matrix (VM) Slash Sheet for SAE AS6174A, Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel.  It is a tool to review and evaluate compliance with standardized verification criteria.

Compliance is reviewed using a Verification Matrix (VM).  This tabular tool covers the various requirement clauses of AS 6174A.  The matrix table contains the following columns:

  • The AS 6174A clause number
  • The 4.0 Verification Matrix requirement
  • The criteria for compliance
  • The recommended method of evalution (MOE)
  • Your record of compliance
  • A field for you to mark as yes or no
  • A field for your notes

This is a valuable tool to use when setting up your process for material traceability.

The AS 6174A paved the way for the AS 6174/1 by authorizing the development of slash sheets.  Expect more of them to be released for this important standard on the prevention of the inclusion of counterfeit materials into your products.  Future slash sheets should focus on various commodities.

New AS 6174 Revision A – Counterfeit Material

Well, it’s been a big month for standards on spotting and eliminating counterfeit material and components from the supply chain, and yep!  Here’s another one!  AS 6174, “Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel,” has just been revised.  The new Revision A is available from Document Center Inc. in both paper format and for pdf download.  It cancels and replaces the original release from 2013.

This Aerospace Standard provides you with a methodology to maximize the availability of authentic material, including procuring material from reliable sources.  It discusses methods like certification, traceability, testing and inspection which assure authenticity and conformance of material in your supply chain.   It shows you how to control material that you’ve identified as fraudulent or counterfeit.  And it provides guidance on how to report such material to other users and to the authorities.

The new Revision A has been generated because a significant error in the standard’s material traceability requirement was discovered.  This edition corrects that problem by updating sections 3.1.2.c, 3.1.2.f, and 3.1.6.  It also establishes precedence and provision for use of slash sheet documents.

New SAE AS 6174 on Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel

SAE Committee G-21 on Counterfeit Materiel has been busy lately and has just released the new SAE AS 6174, “Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel.”  It’s available from Document Center Inc. now.

AS 6174 2012 Edition standardizes practices to:

a. maximize availability of authentic materiel (made from the proper materials using the proper processes with required testing,)

b. procure materiel from reliable sources,

c. assure authenticity and conformance of procured materiel

d. control materiel identified as counterfeit, and

e. report counterfeit materiel to other potential users and government investigative authorities.

This aerospace standard is part of an on-going standards developing effort to provide guidance for industry on this topic.  Other standards of interest are: AS 5553, “Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition,” ARP 6178, “Fraudulent/Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Tool for Risk Assessment of Distributors,” GEIA TB-0003, “Counterfeit Parts and Materials Risk Mitigation,” ASTM F1448, “Standard Guide for Selection of Security Technology for Protection Against Counterfeiting, Alteration, Diversion, Duplication, Simulation, and Substitution (CADDSS) of Products or Documents,” and IEC 62668-1, “Process management for avionics – Counterfeit prevention – Part 1: Avoiding the use of counterfeit, fraudulent and recycled electronic components.”
