ASTM A580/A580M 2015 – Stainless Steel Wire

ASTM A580/A580M, “Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Wire,” has just been updated.  It is a copyright document so it is not available as a free pdf download.  However, you can purchase a copy of this specification from the authorized distributor, Document Center Inc., now.  This new edition has a number of significant changes and makes the previous 2014 Edition obsolete.

What does the ASTM A580/A580M cover?  This is the go-to document for stainless steel wire of all kinds, with the exception of free-machining types.  FYI: stainless steel wire is used in corrosion resistant and high-temperature service.  You’ll purchase this type of wire in coils.

Why does the ASTM number include both the A580 and the A580M designation?  This ASTM standard includes dimensions in both inch-pound and metric formats.  The inch-pound units are the default measurements — for delivery as metric, you’ll need to include this as a requirement in your order.

Most of the ASTM A580/A580M 2015 Edition is comprised of Tables.  Table 1 provides you with the chemical composition of a wide number of Austenitic, Austenitic-Ferritic, Ferritic, and Martensitic grades of Stainless Steel.  These grades are all called out by UNS number.  Table 2 gives you the mechanical test requirements for the same set of material.  Table 3 covers the response to heat treatment required.

What are the changes to the new 2015 Edition of A580/A580M?  The committee A01 has pointed out the following areas where changes have occurred:

  • An editorial change has been made to Table 1 (between UNS S28200 and UNS S30200)
  • Cb+Ta has been changed to Cb
  • There are corrections for both UNS S34700 and UNS 34751.
  • UNS S34800 has also had corrections
  • Table 1 has updates for the UNS reference

Why should you get a copy of this new edition?  Your copies of previous editions of the ASTM A580/A580M are now obsolete.  So order your 2015 Edition now at the Document Center Inc. webstore www.document-center.com.  Here’s a link directly to the order page for ASTM A580/A580M.  You’ll be able to order the document in both paper format and for pdf download.  And if you’d like online access, contact our staff for more information on our Standards Online multi-user service.  You can reach us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Remember, we’ve been an authorized distributor of ASTM standards since the 1980’s.  Make us your Standards Experts!

New ASTM A580/A580M 2012 Edition, Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Wire

ASTM A580/A580M, 2012 Edition, “Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Wire,” has just been released and is now available from Document Center Inc.  The document was editorially corrected within weeks, so that the new correct edition is the ASTM A580/A580M-12(e1) Edition.

This specification covers stainless steel wire, except the free-machining types. It includes round, square, octagon, hexagon, and shape wire in coils only for the more commonly used types of stainless steels for general corrosion resistance and high-temperature service.

ASTM A580/A580M steel specimens undergo the following conditions: (1) annealed as a final heat treatment; (2) cold worked to higher strength; (3) heat treated to an intermediate temper; or (4) heat treated to a hard temper by austenitizing, quenching, and tempering at a relatively low temperature.  The materials are cold drawn, annealed, and pickled.

The steel wires are expected to conform to the required chemical compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, nitrogen, and other elements such as niobium , vanadium, copper, tantalum, titanium and cobalt as defined in Table 1.

Table 2 covers mechanical test requirements that verify that the steel specimens conform to the required values of tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. The martensitic grades conform to the required values of hardness after heat treatment.

The original changes to the standard include the addition of new grades to both table 1 and table 2.  The editorial change that followed corrected Table 2 only.
