ASTM E527 Updated – UNS Numbering

ASTM E527, “Standard Practice for Numbering Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System (UNS),” has been updated.  The new 2016 Edition replaces the previous 2012 Edition, which is now obsolete.  This standard shows you how the UNS numbers for metals and alloys are assigned.  The UNS system is a commercial designation for metals and alloys arranged by “families.”  They are listed in the Metals and Alloys in the Unified Number System (Please see my previous blog on the last update to this co-numbered ASTM DS56 and SAE HS1086).

ASTM E527 is used to specify the families themselves and the number ranges available for each of them.  Different standards associations have the responsibility for actually handling the assignments.  So the Aluminum Association in Arlington VA handles all alluminum and alluminum alloy UNS numbers.  The Copper Development Association covers copper and copper alloys, and so on.

ASTM E527 also has a section on requesting number assignments themselves.  This is the process whereby commercially used metals and alloys are given UNS numbers.  There is a specific form to use and chemical composition may be required in the case of alloys.

So what could be revised in this new edition of the standard?  A whole new “family” has been added for Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys!  Yes, the new UNS number series B00001 to B99999 has been added.  This has created changes in Clause 2.1 and in Tables 1 and 3.  And there are a couple of other editorial updates as well.

New 12th Edition released for SAE HS 1086, ASTM DS 56 — Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System

“Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System (UNS),” co-numbered SAE HS 1086 and ASTM DS56, has been revised and the new 12th Edition is available from Document Center Inc.  The volume provides a cross-index for nationally used metals and alloys, with a complete listing of the Unified Numbers, description and chemical composition, and finally the specifications and standards that have been released for each.

We often use this volume to assist Document Center customers determine what standards they should be using when the only information is the UNS number itself.  You can easily recognize these designators because they consist of one letter followed by 5 digits —  G10200 for carbon steel, S42400 for ferritic stainless steel, and C95710 for aluminum bronze are three examples.

Not only that, but the book also contains sections that allow the user to work in reverse.  That is, using the standard number or even a common trade designation, you can then track the kind of material that it uses.
