Changes to BPVC 2015 Sections X, XI and XII

The BPVC, “ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,” is being revised.  The new BPVC 2015 Edition will be available in July and you’ll want to pre-order your copy from Document Center Inc. now.  This new update replaces the previous 2013 Edition which is now obsolete.  You’ll notice that the set is now updated on a two year schedule, which means that there are not any addenda released any more.  The interpretations are still available and are posted online.

ASME has made a list of key changes available to ASME dealers like Document Center Inc., so we’re letting you know about them in advance of the release in July.  Here are the main things to look for in your new editions of the Sections X, XI and XII:

For Section X, Key changes have occurred in Code Case 2820, Composite Pressure Vessels for High Pressure Fluids.

For Section XI, Key changes have occurred in:

  • Appendix D
  • Article A-3000 for K Calculation Methods for Surface and Subsurface Flaws
  • Through-Wall or Through-Weld Leakage in Class 1 Components
  • A new code case has been released to replace N-629.  This has also revised Appendix A, A-4200 for KIa Fracture Toughness Determination.

For Section XII, Paragraphs in Part PR have been changed to:

  • revise requirements for pressure relief devices
  • update 1-1.4(a), 1-1.4(c)(3)
  • delete 1-1.4(d)(11)
  • add a definition of “Material Type Report” to Appendix III and III2.
  • revise the definition for “Dynamic Load Condition” in 1-1.4(c)(3)
  • update Modal Appendix 1 for Allowable Stress Criteria

Changes to BPVC 2015 Sections VIII and IX

BPVC, “ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,” is being revised.  The new BPVC 2015 Edition will be available in July and you’ll want to pre-order your copy from Document Center Inc. now.  I recently reviewed the changes to Sections I to V.  So today I’ll take a look at the changes for Sections  VIII and IX.

As I noted previously, this new update replaces the 2013 Edition which is now obsolete.  Another thing to recognize is that the set is now updated on a two year schedule.  This change means that the addenda are not released any more.  However, the interpretations are still available and are posted online.  If you use the BPVC, you’ll want to make sure you update your copies on this new 2-year cycle.

Now for the changes to Sections VIII and IX for the new 2015 Edition:

Section VIII, Division 1:

  • Code case 2560 has been incorporated
  • Intent interpretation with revision to UCL-11 and revision to Part 3.3.6.2
  • Parts U-2(b) and U-2(e) for clarifying inspector responsibility for the review of calculations has also been updated
  • UHA-51, UG-40(e), UW-3(a) and UW-11(a) have revisions and interpretations
  • Paragraph UCS-66(f) is changed

Section VIII, Division 2:

  • Changes have been made to the review of environmental factor for structural stress method
  • Changes occur in Table 6.1 on equations for calculating forming strains and Code Case 2804
  • Paragraphs 3.11.2.2(b), 3.11.4, 4.5.2, Table 4.2.1 and Table 7.2 have revisions and interpretations

Section VIII, Division 3:

  • There’s a new mandatory Appendix for moving KD-240 linear elastic analysis
  • The final revisions to Code Case 2579 have been incorporated
  • Changes have been made to KM-211.2 (a), (b), and (d) for the manufacture of large vessels from single piece forgings
  • Modifications have been made for rupture disk devices

Section IX:

  • Friction stir welding procedure qualification has been changed
  • Electrofusing in Part QF has been modified
  • There’s a new non-mandatory Appendix on the qualification of welders using ISO rules

For Section I:

  • You’ll find changes in the Parts Fabrication Certification Program
  • A Part PFE (Requirements for Feedwater Economizers) as been added
  • There are changes with the addition of Solar Heated Steam Generators
  • Part PL on Requirements for Locomotive Boilers have been added
  • There’s a new paragraph PEB-8.3, which allows for the use of Section VIII rules for the design of electric immersion heater element support plates (unstayed flat heads)

For Section II:

  • Testing requirements have been added to Appendix 5 for advanced alloys like CSEF steels
  • 25 ferrous specifications have been adopted or revised in Part A
  • An additional 10 nonferrous specifications have been adopted or revised in Part B

For Section III:

  • There are now definitions for local primary membrane stress intensity and for local thin areas
  • Code case N-755 have been incorporated
  • Appendix W has been updated
  • Design by analysis rules for reversing dynamic loads has been updated
  • Revisions have been make for stress indices for branch connections for r/R ≤ 0.5

Section IV:

  • You’ll find updates to the parts fabrication certification program
  • Section HG-401.1 on safety valve sizing has been revised
  • Revisions are made in the section on manufacturers with multiple locations
  • Section HG-530 on marking of boilers is changed
  • The mandatory Appendix 2 is also modified

Section V:

  • The section on APR Technology is updated
  • Article 18 on guided wave UT has been adopted
  • Revisions have been made to the mandatory Appendix to Article 4 for the examination of HDPE
  • 15 ASTM specifications for nondestructive examination have been adopted or revised in the following parts: 10-1576, 11-1196, 11-1197, 11-1198, 11-1199, 11-1975, 12-1986, 12-189, 12-1995, 12-1996, 12-1997, 12-1998, 12-1999, 12-2042, 13-1981, 13-904, 13-905, 13-906.
