New EN 9102 2015 Edition – Aerospace Quality

EN 9102, “Aerospace series. Quality systems. First article inspection,” has just been updated and the 2015 Edition is available now from Document Center Inc.  It is a technical update to the previous 2006 Edition, which is now obsolete.  Countries within the European Union have until June of this year to adopt the new revision and withdraw all conflicting or duplicate national standards.

Who’s in charge of the EN 9102?  Within the EU, the caretaker is the Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe – Standardization (ASD-STAN).  The document itself originated with the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG).  It was adopted by the EU on 9/27/2015 — thus the 2015 Edition on the cover page.  There are 3 official languages that are released by CEN:  English, French and German.  Any national adoptions in those languages will always consist of the original EN copy.  Only editions in other languages will have been translated independently.

What does the EN 9102 cover?  This standard is an essential aerospace quality standard for First Article Inspection (FAI).  This is the way that a manufacturer proves that a production line will deliver parts and assemblies that meet the engineering and design requirements.  In other words, you take the first production run and verify that the initial part is compliant.  If so, you can proceed with the balance of the run with confidence.

What’s changed in this new edition of EN 9102?  This revision has addressed the following areas:

  • The value of the FAI process to an organization is now emphasized.
  • The planning and evaluation activities are now separate and enhanced.
  • Digital Product Definition (DPD) and its relationship to FAI has been added.
  • And other updates to meet stakeholder needs have been made.
