ISO 10256 Ice Hockey Standards

ISO 10256, Head and face protection for use in ice hockey, has been revised with the release of 4 new parts.  Eventually, there will be 6 parts issued in total. When all 6 are published, the ISO 10256 will be withdrawn.  Until then, you’ll need to use the ISO 10256 and the applicable parts to be complete and correct.

What are the ISO 10256 and the new parts?  They are the international standards for protective equipment to be used by ice hockey players and referees. They are to be used by manufacturers, conformity assessment agencies, end users and ice hockey associations.  They provide information on performance characteristics like construction, shock absorption, puck-impact resistance, penetration, retention-system properties, field of vision, and the marking and information provided on head and face protectors.

What exactly are the new parts?  As noted above, there are 4 released new parts for this standard, plus an additional 2 in process.  Here is information on each:

  • Protective equipment for use in ice hockey – Part 1: General requirements
  • Protective equipment for use in ice hockey – Part 2: Head protection for skaters
  • Protective equipment for use in ice hockey – Part 3: Facial protectors for skaters
  • Protective equipment for use in ice hockey – Part 4: Head and face protection for goalkeepers
  • Protective equipment for use in ice hockey – Part 5: Neck laceration protectors for ice hockey players
  • Protective equipment for use in ice hockey – Part 6: Lower leg protectors for ice hockey players

Parts 1 through 4 have just been released.  Part 5 is nearing completion.  Part 6 is still “under preparation.”

Since ice hockey is a sport with high risk of injury, including paralysis and/or dealth, the use of specific protective gear is of the highest importance.  Not only does the sport demand high quality equipment, but regulations like the PPE Directive (Personal Protective Equipment – Council Directive 89/686/EEC) do as well.  The subcommittee in charge of this standard wanted to not only set requirements in line with today’s technologies, but to also leave the door open for future materials and new construction techniques.

If you’re involved in the sport of ice hockey or manufacture PPE products for this application, you’ll need copies of the new publications.  Use an authorized distributor like Document Center Inc. for all your standards purchases.  We have been working with standards since 1982 and have over a million publications available to you at our webstore.  Head to www.document-center.com to search and order standards.  Or use these direct links to the updates you’re interested in:
