SAE J3114 – Automated Driving Terms

SAE J3114 has just been released.  This new Information Report is titled “Human Factors Definitions for Automated Driving and Related Research Topics.”  It covers factors to consider when integrating automated driving system features into a vehicle.  This is called “driver/user-vehicle-interface” (DVI).  It is a complementary document to SAE J3016 (“Taxonomy and Definitions for Terms Related to Driving Automation Systems for On-Road Motor Vehicles”).

As I have mentioned before, setting up terms and definitions is essential when developing standards for new technologies.  Since Document Center Inc. is based here in Silicon Valley, we have a number of customers who are working on these types of computer-aided driving systems.  Such a standard helps research and design improvement by setting up definitions for key concepts and terms.  It is a basic publication that anyone in this field should review.

How did SAE develop the J3114?  SAE has set up Task Force #5 on Automated Vehicles and DVI challenges to look into this field.  First, the task force reviewed the literature on human factors and ergonomics to spot publications directly addessing driving automation.  They found over 200 articles to review.  With this information, the task force set up key concept categories.  The final result of this process is the J3114 information report.

The 60-page publication covers a wide range of topics.  Each is defined and the literature reference(s) for each are listed.   So for “complacency,” there’s a definition, a key reference (with detailed bibliographic information), and notes.  An example is also provided to give you greater understanding of how the term is used.

Much of the document is taken up by Annex A.  This is a table that lists important preliminary publications used in the development of this report.  The columns include one for the reference itself, one on the DVI design topics addressed, and one with a series of keywords.  This can assist you in finding additional information on any area of interest to you and your organization.
