IEC TS 62668-1 updated – Avoiding counterfeits

Avoiding the use of counterfeit parts, especially in the aerospace industry, has become a high priority for many organizations.  The new Edition 3.0 of IEC TS 62668-1, “Process management for avionics – Counterfeit prevention – Part 1: Avoiding the use of counterfeit, fraudulent and recycled electronic components,” should be in your ansenal if this is an issue for you.  This is a technical update, which replaces the now obsolete Edition 2.0 from 7/2014.  The document focuses in on the use of understood and trustworthy sources for components, primarily by using OCM (original component manufacturer) channels.

Although this document was  written specifically for the aerospace industry, it can be used by all organizations with high performance requirements.  You’ll learn why there’s a trend to the use of the term “fraudulent components” in place of “counterfeit parts.”  You’ll understand the importance of using OCMs that identify and protect their intellectual property (IP).  Risks associated with the use of suspect components are clearly described.  Procedures for minimizing these risks are given. And reporting protocols to use when reporting IP violations are given, along with a list of useful contacts.

If you use the technical specification already, you’re surely wondering where you’ll find the changes in this new edition.  Here’s the list provided by the committee:

  • Updates reflect the abandonment of the Chinese RECS scheme.
  • Reference to AS/EN/JISQ 9100 note that the upcoming Revision D to that publication will contain an anti-counterfeit requirement to meet the IEC TS 62688-1 Clause 4.2
  • AS 6496 (from SAE) is now available for franchised distributors and is so noted in references here to the U.S. DFARS rule 252.246.7007 and UK Defence Standard 05-135
  • Clause 4.5.1 has added references to more GAO, OECD, and ICC reports
  • Other references have also been updated, including various web links.
