IEC 63000 – RoHS Documentation

IEC 63000 has just been released.  The title of this new standard is “Technical documentation for the assessment of electrical and electronic products with respect to the restriction of hazardous substances.”  It is derived from the EN 50581, which is a European regional standard.  It supports RoHS legislation or contractual obligations, whether in Europe or elsewhere.

Why use the IEC 63000?  For manufacturers that use component parts, it is not always practical to test all of the materials that actually make up their products.  Yet they must provide documentation about the inclusion or exclusion of hazardous materials.  So some of their technical documentation for compliance must come from suppliers.

IEC 63000 is designed to help you specify the technical documentation you’ll need to compile for this type of compliance declaration.  The goal is one set of documents to meet various substance regulations worldwide.  The standard helps you meet this goal by defining the content of the technical documentation.  It then specifies the tasks that need to be undertaken by the manufacturer in order to provide this information.  Each task is covered in detail.

Compliance with various regulations can provide manufacturers and others with added layers of information gathering and documentation.  Finding ways to codify how you handle the many requirements you face is essential to streamlining these processes.  Further, having settled protocols for such documentation creation and maintenance leads to improve conformance.  It also can reduce problems cropping up as products are shipped to various regions.
