IEC/TR 62999-250 has just been released. This new technical report is titled Printed electronics – Part 250: Material technologies required in printed electronics for wearable smart devices. It discusses what wearable smart devices (WSDs) are, their unique features, and what standards are needed to support their development in the future.
WSDs are a new frontier in the integration of computer technology with our daily lives. As these devices evolve, issues regarding biocompatibility, flexability, size, features, and so on are being explored. IEC/TR 62899-250 provides an overview of the challenges surrounding the development of these devices. It also takes a look at the technologies that need further exploration and the standardization needed to make these applications possible.
Wearable Smart Devices are intended to be attached directly to the human body. Many rely on additive manufacturing techniques, putting the functional materials on a base substance. But there has been a real problem in evaluating these products. The IEC/TR 62899-2 was written to resolve this by reviewing the problem from certain angles.
So the report takes a look at the many ways wearables will be provided to customers. These include accessory (like watches and bracelets), clothing, skin patches and implants. It then reviews the areas where standardization is needed to support these delivery options. Areas like safety, environmental compliance, adhesion, and 3D design and manufacturing are discussed.
