ISO 17361 Updated for Lane Departure Warning Systems

Is your car getting “smarter?”  If so, ISO 17361 on lane departure warning systems (LDWSs) may be partially responsible.  The standard is titled Intelligent transport systems – Lane departure warning systems – Performance requirements and test procedures.  It has just been revised and the new 2nd Edition is available now from Document Center Inc.

LDWSs help you keep your vehicle in your lane on highways and such.  The ISO 17361 is specifically for the warning system.  It does not address the use of automated action to avoid collisions.  This type of  warning system is intended to prompt the driver back into the lane when inattention causes “drifting” in the lane.

So you’ll find information on what such a system should consist of, various classifications of these systems, your human-machine interface (HMI) and test methods you can use to test your LDWS.  What kinds of things does this include?  Well, for example figure 1 addresses the concept of warning thresholds and warning threshold placement zones.   This helps you define the lane boundary, with specific outside zones that delineate the earliest warning line and the latest warning line.

The 1st Edition of the ISO 17361 was released in 2007.  This new 2nd Edition is a minor revision, but it does cancel and replace that previous document.  The committee notes the following changes:

  • Clause 2 has been updated
  • The Annex a has been deleted (you’ll use ISO 11270 instead in subclause 3.2)
  • Unicode is now used for the previous inequality signs

You’ll need the 2nd Edition if you use this publication.  Purchase an authorized copy from Document Center Inc. at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Here is a direct link to the order page for ISO 17361 for your convenience.  And you may also want to take a look at our Document Center Inc.
