ISO 17776, Petroleum and natural gas industries – Offshore production installations – Major accident hazard management during the design of new installations, has been updated. The new 2nd Edition was released at the end of 2016 and is a technical revision. It specifically offers requirements and guidance for avoiding major accident (MA) hazards for new offshore installations for petroleum and natural gas.
How does ISO 17776 do this? First, it provides requirements for identifying those MA hazards and their causes. Then it discusses how to assess such hazards for both likelihood and for consequences. It provides guidance on developing your strategies for managing these types of hazards. Then it reviews the measures needed both in design and throughout the lifecycle for successful control.
You’ll find the information covers a series of landmarks in the design and construction process. Each section is arranged to first tackle the issue of objectives and goals. Then the functional requirements are specified. At the end of the standard, Annexes provide specific guidelines to support the functional requirements. These cover such areas as MA management identification and evaluation tools and barrier system performance standards. Please note: The ISO 17776 should be used along with ISO 13702 and ISO 15544.
The new 2nd Edition is a technical revision. It replaces the now obsolete 1st Edition from 2000. The revision’s title provides you with insight into the changes that are now in the new update. Formerly the document addressed “tools and techniques for hazard identification and risk assessment.” Now, as noted above, it focuses in on “MA hazard management during the design of new installations.”
