O-M-232 updated – Methyl Alcohol

O-M-232, “Methanol (Methyl Alcohol),” has been updated.  The release of the Revision M is the first update of the publication since 2006.  Even though many material specs tend to be stable, the new revision for this federal specification contains a number of significant changes throughout the document.  You’ll want a copy if you use this standard in your business.

O-M-232 is a federal specification provided by the U.S. General Services Administration.  It is classified as a “public domain” document — It is not covered by the laws of copyright because U.S. taxpayers have paid for it’s development and maintenance.  Many of these types of documents have been withdrawn and replaced by industry publications.  However, a number of frequently referenced specs continue to be supported by GSA.  O-M-232 is one such publication.

What does O-M-232 cover?  It is a purchasing document used by the federal government and others.  It covers three grades and four unit quantities of methanol.  It’s widely used in industry as well.

What are the changes in the new Revision M for O-M-232?  You’ll find changes in the referenced documents section.  This means that there will be updates in the areas where those referenced documents appear.  These changes show up in Table 1, the chemical and physical characteristics of grades A and AA methanol.  And you’ll find them in Section 4.3, the test methods clause.  Other revisions include the mapping of  Grade A methanol from the O-M-232 to NATO identification code number S-747.  Two new International standardization agreements are referenced at the end of the publication.  And safety data sheet  requirements are updated as well.

To make it easier for you to find all these revisions, the O-M-232 contains black lines in the margins where they occur.  This is a helpful feature that you’ll find in some government publications and occassionally in some industry standards as well.
