MIL-PRF-55110 Updated – Printed Wiring Boards

MIL-PRF-55110 has been updated.  The specification is titled Printed Wiring Board, Rigid, General Specification for.  The new Edition is Revision H with Amendments 1 and 2.  Compliance with this new edition must be completed by September 18, 2017.

The MIL-PRF-55110 was previously numbered MIL-P-55110 and is one of the major PWB (Printed Wiring Board) specifications for government contract work.  It was inactivated in December 1997 and should only be used for replacement purposes.  New design should meet the requirements of MIL-PRF-31032 (Printed Circuit Board/Printed Wiring Board, General Specification for), Revision C from 2016.

MIL-PRF-55110 provides you with the performance and qualification requirements for rigid single-sided, double-sided and multilayered printed wiring boards.  These boards can include both plated and non-plated through holes.  Four types of PWB’s are included in the document — that is, the single-sided, double-sided, multilayer with plated holes, and multilayer with plated and blind or buried via holes.

Changes in this new edition are clearly marked with black lines in the outside margin of the document.  You’ll find them on the following pages:

1, 7, 15, 17, 24, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 36, 38, 40, 42, 47, 48, 51, 56, and 78.

If you’re familiar with this 134-page document, you’ll soon realize that the bulk of the new updates occur in Appendix A.

MIL-PRF-55110 New Amendment 1 for Revision H

MIL-PRF-55110, “Printed Wiring Board, Rigid, General Specification for,” has just been updated and the new Revision H with Amendment 1 interfiled is available now from Document Center Inc.  Formerly known as MIL-P-55110, this specification has been an essential PWB document for quite some time.  However, ever since the end of 1997, it is only used for replacement purposes.  For new design, be sure to use MIL-PRF-31032.

There has been quite a bit of updating lately for our standards and specs on Printed Wiring/Circuit Boards.  The IPC-A-600, IPC-A-610, and J-STD-001 have all be revised as well.  The MIL-PRF-55110 complements these other  publications by addressing U.S. government requirements used during the procurement cycle.  It is a performance specification, defining qualification requirements for rigid single-sided, double-sided, and multilayered printed wiring boards.  These boards may or may not be plated through holes.  Detailed requirements may be further specified in referenced drawings and other documentation.

Those of you using the MIL-PRF-55110 will want to know where the changes instituted by the Amendment 1 will be found.  For your convenience, black lines have been inserted into the margins where the changes occur.  New references are made to the Qualified Products Database 55110, a change in how the QML or QPL information is made available to government contractors.  There’s also an administrative update to how CAGE code information is provided.

Technical changes occur in Annex A sections A.3.5, A.3.5.1, A.3.5.5.1, A.3.6.1, A.3.6.2.1.1, A.3.6.2.1.2, Table A-III, A.3.6.4.5, A.3.7.4.6.2, A.3.7.6.2.1.2, A.4.5.1, A.4.6.2.2, Table A-VI, A.4.7, A.4.7.1.1, A.4.8.2.1, and A.7.3.  In Annex D, look for changes in section D.4.2.  In Annex F there’s a change in Figure F-4’s notes.  Figure G-22 has been revised in Annex G.  For Annex H, Table H-I has been updated.  As always, the document does note that all changes may not have been marked so it is your responsibility to make sure you meet all it’s requirements.

When will you need to comply with MIL-PRF-55110 Revision H and Amendment 1?  You’ll have until September 20, 2016 to meet the updated requirements made by the amendment.

New MIL-PRF-55110 Revision H on Rigid PWB’s

MIL-PRF-55110, “Printed Wiring Board, Rigid, General Specification for,” has just been revised.  The new Revision H is the first update since Revision G was released with Amendments 1 through 3 back in 2008.  While the specification is inactive (you’ll use MIL-PRF-31032 for new design), it is still widely used for replacement purposes.  If you use the document, you’ll want to get your new edition now.  Compliance with the new Revision H must be completed by April 17, 2015.

The document was originally released as MIL-P-55110, “Printed Wiring Board, General Specification For.”  As part of Mil Spec reform back in the 1990’s, the document was re-classified as a performance specification and given the new number MIL-PRF-55110 to reflect the change.  About 6 months after the transition, the document was inactivated.  However, it continues to be maintained and widely used.

It’s been 6 years since the last update, so changes are extensive (no notations in the margins to help you spot revised material in this new publication).  You’ll expect that as with previous updates, your documentation and processes will be affected.  Having said that, the new Revision H is significantly longer than the previous Revision G.  Why all the new material?  The addition of a number of new Appendices.  Let’s review them:

  • Appendix A – Now Product Assurance Requirements for Qualified Products List Level
  • Appendix B – Now Product Assurance Requirements For Qualified Manufacturer List Programs
  • Appendix C – Still C = 0 Sampling, Test Equipment, And Inspection Facilities
  • Appendix D – Still Supersession, Conformance Inspection Options, And Use Of Legacy Design Standards
  • Appendix E – Now Qualification Requirements For All Levels Of Product Assurance
  • Appendix F – New External Visual And Dimensional Illustrations
  • Appendix G – New Metalographic Illustrations
  • Appendix H – New Quality Conformance Test Circuitry

You’ll notice that the old Appendix E on Sequential Electrochemical Reduction Analysis (SERA) solderability testing is not included in this new edition.

If you use MIL-PRF-55110 in your business, you’ll want to get a copy of the new Revision H.  It’s available to order on the Document Center website, www.document-center.com.  Or you can contact our staff by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’ve been supporting the electronics and defense industries since our inception in 1982.  Make us your Standards Experts!
