NEMA MG1 Updated

NEMA MG1, “Motors and Generators,” has been updated.  The new 2016 Edition can be purchased now.  The standard is used in the selection and application of motors and generators.  It’s a practical document, with information about performance, efficiency, safety, testing, construction, and manufacturing AC and DC motors and generators.

NEMA MG1 is more important than ever.  New U.S. DOE (Department of Energy) regulations set efficiency targets for motor manufacturers.  They also redefine electric motors and established new classes of motors.  Single-speed induction motors in the range of 1 to 500 horsepower now need to meet the premium efficiency levels of NEMA MG1.

What are the changes in this new update?  New requirements focus on durability of definite purpose inverter-fed polyphase motors rated 600 volts or less.  You’ll find guidance for the procedures you’ll use during efficiency and temperature rise testing.  Nameplate marking requirements have been clarified.  Information on the tolerances that can be observed for performance characteristics is also revised.

What kinds of motors are covered by NEMA MG1?  Some good examples are motors that power production machinery in manufacturing plants.  These types of motors also also used in oil field exploration and recovery.  You’ll find them in heating and air conditioning aplications.  And they are important in portable water and fire protection pumping systems.

New NEMA MG1, Motors and Generators

The new 644-page NEMA MG1, “Motors and Generators,” has just been released and can be purchased from Document Center Inc. now.  This 2011 Edition assists users in the proper selection and application of motors and generators.  It contains practical information concerning performance, safety, testing, construction and manufacture of alternating-current and direct-current motors and generators.

NEMA MG1:2011 applies to the classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures for rotating electrical machines.   It defines the requirements for protective enclosures that are in all other respects suitable for their intended use and which, from the point of view of materials and workmanship, ensure that the properties dealt with in this standard are maintained under normal conditions of use.

Although some definite-purpose motors and generators are included, the standards do not apply to machines such as generators and traction motors for railroads, motors for mining locomotives, arc-welding generators, automotive accessory and toy motors and generators, machines mounted on airborne craft, etc.

NEMA standards are available from Document Center Inc. at our website, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We have been selling standards and services for standards users for 30 years and can assist you with all your conformance documentation requirements.
