Errata released for NFPA 70 2011 Edition, the National Electrical Code

NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, has just had an errata released modifying the new 2011 Edition.  It is the second errata released for this edition of the NEC  so far.  Additionally, there have been four Tentative Interim Amendments released which also impact the use of the document.

Errata are numbered using first the Code number, then the year of the edition and finally the numeric identifier.  So the first Errata for NFPA 70 was Errata 70-11-1, from 4/8/2011.  This errata made pen-and-ink changes to 23 different pages.  The new second Errata is 70-11-2, from 1/24/2012, with changes for 8 different pages.

Tentative Interim Amendments (TIA’s) follow a similar numbering scheme.  A TIA is tentative because it has not been processed through the entire standards-making procedures.  It is interim because it is effective only between editions of the standard.  A TIA automatically becomes a proposal  for the next edition of the standard.

TIA 11-1 for the NEC, released on 3/1/2011, makes 2 exceptions for section 680.42(B).  TIA’s 11-2, 11-3, and 11-4 were all released 10/19/2011.  TIA 11-2 modifies section 625.13 on Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Connection.  TIA 11-3 impacts section 625.14, Rating for Electric vehicle supply equipment.  And TIA 11-4 is a change for section 230.44(5).

NFPA 70 is an essential Code for U.S. industry.  Be sure to keep your copy up-to-date by keeping track of the errata and amendments.  If you need help with this, count on Document Center Inc. to provide you with timely update information by email notifications.  The service is free when you buy a standard from us, or may be purchased separately.

New NFPA 79 2012 Edition, Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery, is scheduled for release in October 2011

NFPA 79, Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery, is about to be released as the new 2012 edition in October.  Available for pre-order now from Document Center Inc., the 93-page Standard applies to the electrical/electronic equipment, apparatus, or systems of industrial machines operating from a nominal voltage of 600 volts or less, and commencing at the point of connection of the supply to the electrical equipment of the machine.

This edition presents the new best practices for the full spectrum of equipment — from single-motored drill presses to complex automated manufacturing systems.

Critical changes in the 2012 NFPA 79 include:

  • New definitions and revised rules for expanded wireless and cableless technology that align with IEC 60204-1
  • New sections in Chapters 6 and 16 recognizing deadly arc flash and stored energy hazards to protect workers and correlate with the 2012 NFPA 70E
  • New rules for selecting overcurrent devices for motors, and the important addition of a 90 degree C temperature column to the conductor ampacity table. This Standard corresponds with the 2011 NEC.
  • Addressing concerns from the field, a first-time section in Chapter 12 details conditions where Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) can be used as special cables with clarifications on determining suitability for use under specific conditions.

NFPA 79 does not include the additional requirements for machines intended for use in hazardous (classified) locations.

The 2012 NFPA 79 is a toolkit essential for safety managers, electrical designers, engineers, installers, owners, AHJs, and equipment manufacturers.  Order it on our website, www.document-center.com, or by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re here to help you with all your standards requirements and questions.

New TIA 11-1 for NFPA 70 2011 National Electrical Code

A new TIA (Tentative Interim Amendment) 11-1 has been issued for the recently released 2011 Edition of the NEC (National Electrical Code) NFPA 70.  This particular TIA provides 2 exceptions in section 680.42(B) of the code.

A TIA is an amendment to an NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) document processed in accordance with specific NFPA protocols.  It is not required to go through the entire codes and standards-making process of being published for review and comment. It is labeled “interim” because it is effective only between editions of a particular standard. A TIA automatically becomes a proposal for the next edition of the standard.

Requests for TIAs need to provide the recommended revision and the reason as to why it is of an emergency nature requiring prompt action. The submitter must also provide the appropriate endorsments in writing of two members of the applicable technical committee or technical correlating committee within NFPA.

It is different from an Errata, which is a correction of the text of the standard.  A TIA provides a technical modification of the document itself.

All NFPA Standards, as well as the Erratum and TIAs, are available from Document Center Inc. through our website, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us via phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re always happy to assist you with any standards-related issues.

The new NFPA 70 F 2011 Edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) is here!

The new 2011 Edition of the National Electrical Code, NFPA-70, is scheduled for public release 10/10/2010.  It is the source for safe installation of wiring and equipment.  The code, commonly called the NEC, is widely cited in state (all 50!) and local laws and is considered the de facto standard for electricity.  It covers electrical requirements for buildings and other public and private structures, such as mobile homes, RV’s and parking garages.  It also covers the installation of conductors and equipment that connect to electricity supplies.

NFPA revises the document every 3 years.  The 2011 NEC is the current edition (effective date August 25, 2010).  However, it will be available for public distribution in early October.  It is a step in moving towards greener technologies, by providing rules and regulations to keeping alternative energy sources safe.  It even includes requirements for charging connections for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Here is an abbreviated Table of Contents of the new Code:

Introduction

Chapter 1 General

Chapter 2 Wiring and Protection

Chapter 3 Wiring Methods and Materials (with article 399, incorporating requirements for overhead distribution systems for large electrical system users – over 600 volts, such as school or business campus settings)

Chapter 4 Equipment for General Use

Chapter 5 Special Occupancies

Chapter 6 Special Equipment (includes: 625 with updates for safe battery charging for plug-in hybrid vehicles that reduce the risk of explosion and 694 for small wind electric systems – first time addressed)

Chapter 7 Special Conditions (includes 705 which covers interconnecting generators, windmills, and solar and fuel cells with other power supplies)

Chapter 8 Communications Systems (includes 840 for the increased demand for broadband communications systems with requirements for wireless, routers, and wireless disconnects)

Chapter 9 Tables
