ISO 11469 Plastics Marking Standard Updated

ISO 11469, “Plastics – Generic identification and marking of plastics products,” has been updated.  It defines the system of uniformly marking plastic products.  It’s a generic marking system, used to identify the components of the plastic material used in a given product.  The new 3rd Edition is a technical update and replaces the 2nd Edition from 2000, which is now obsolete.

Surprisingly enough, evidence of standardization can show up in the markings used on many products and materials.  You may be having new piping installed at your home and realize that there is identification marking that references the acronym of a specific SDO or in some other way suggests a standardized marking system.  Other times these numbers or marks will show up on boxes, power cords, and many other items you use every day.

Plastic products definitely fall into this category.  In the case of the Standard ISO 11469, identification markings are notated by the use of the symbols “>” and “<” on either side of the acronym for the composition of the plastic.  The schema provides directions for marking single polymers or copolymers and blends or alloys.

What are the plastic products addressed by ISO 11469?  The definition has been modified in this new release.  But basically it’s plastic material that is ready to be used for various types of applications.  So it’s ready to mold or form into useful items or components.

Another change to this edition of ISO 11469 is information on marking products that include plastics recyclate.  Recyclates are raw materials sent to a waste recycling plant or materials recovery facility for processing.  Understanding the mix of new and recycled content may be important to you.

Plastic remains a useful substance, playing an important role in the manufacturing of many types of products.  Knowing that the material you use in your business matches your requirements is essential.  Correct and clear marking of your plastic supplies needs to be supported.  The use of ISO 11469 will provide you with the assurances you need.
