ASME A17.1 2016 Elevators and Escalators

ASME A17.1 has been updated.  The Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators has just been revised and the 2016 Edition is here now!  The standards has a dual designation, ASME A17.1 2016 and CSA B44 2016.  This means that the code is used in both the U.S. and Canada for “North American” application.

The new 2016 of ASME A17.1 replaces the previous 2013 Edition.  The official “date of issuance” is 11/20/2016.  You have 6 months to make the transition from the 2013 Edition (now obsolete) to the new 2016 Edition.  The new update will remain in force until the next scheduled update in 2019.

What does the ASME A17.1 cover?  It is the premier safety standard for elevators, escalators and related equipment.  A wide range of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walks and material lifts are covered.  Requirements for the design, construction, installation, operation, testing, inspection, maintenance, alteration and repair are addressed.

Who should be using the ASME A17.1?  ASME says that the Code is “intended for anyone engaged in the safety of elevators, escalators and related conveyances, including those responsible for: design, engineering and manufacture; installation, operation, testing, maintenance, alteration and repair; inspection; plans, contracts, administration, insurance and liability; property, facilities and plant management; and emergency response.”

What’s new in the 2016 Edition?  The following areas have been updated:

• seismic requirements for escalators;
• special purpose personnel elevators;
• rack and pinion elevators;
• residence elevators;
• material lifts with obscured transfer devices; and
• addition of elastomeric buffer requirements.

ASME A17.1 (also known as ASME A17.1/CSA B44), Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, has just been released as the new 2010 Edition.  This Code covers the design, construction, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, and repair of elevators, escalators, moving walks, materials lifts and dumbwaiters.

Major changes for the 2010 edition include:

(a.)  former periodic inspections now being covered under maintenance requirements;
(b.)  additional types of suspension means;
(c.)  elevator illumination updated;
(d.)  allowance of energy conservation methods in escalator usage;
(e.)  revisions of folding car-door requirements covering top-of-car clearances;
(f.)  updated communication requirements in elevators and;
(g.)  additional Type B Material Lift requirements.

While the ASME A17.2 companion standard, Guide for Inspection of Elevators, Escalators, and Moving Walks, has also been released as a new 2010 Edition, it does not fully reflect the latest requirements in this new A17.1 Code.
