IEC 61010-1, Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use – Part 1: General requirements, has been updated with the release of Amendment 1 for Edition 3.0. You have the choice of purchasing the amendment separately or getting the consolidated Edition 3.1, the 3rd Edition and it’s amendment interfiled into 1 document.
One nice feature of IEC consolidated editions is that they are actually redlined. This means that all changes from the previous edition will be highlighted to make identification easier. Of course, getting the amendment by itself will also allow you to see changes as well. However, integrating those changes into the document by hand is laborious.
If you are unsure what the IEC 61010-1 covers, here is a brief description. It covers general safety requirements for:
- Electrical test and measurement equipment
- Electrical industrial process-control equipment
- Electrical laboratory equipment
The Edition 3.0 expanded the scope of the document to include all locations where these types of equipment are used, both professional and non-professional. The section on measuring and testing circuits was removed (and now can be found in IEC 61010-2-030). Insulation requirements were also completely rewritten. Other major updates are noted in the introductory material.
The Amendment 1 for the Edition 3.0 is approximately 25 pages of additional changes. These range from corrections and additions to the referenced documents section to specific updates to the various tests. And a number of the Annexes were revised as well.
