ASTM E1417/E1417M-16

ASTM E1417/E1417M-16, “Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Testing,” has just been released.  This new 2016 Edition replaces the previous 2013 Edition, which is now obsolete.  Just like the new update for the ASTM E1444/E1444M, the changes reflect the addition of a new ASTM standard in the referenced document section.

I’ve blogged about the ASTM E1417/E1417M a number of times.  It is a popular ASTM standard here at Document Center Inc.  It can be used on both nonporous metal and nonmetal components.  It’s applicable for finding discontinuities, like a lack of fusion, corrosion, cracks, laps, cold shuts and porosity, that are open or connected to the surface of a component under examination.

The scope paragraph states that this standard practice “establishes the minimum requirements for conducting liquid penetrant examination.”  This means that you can certainly call out more stringent requirements if you need to, but the ASTM E1417/E1417M is the baseline for viable results.   The standard provides you with information on the various cleaning methods, liquids that can be used for testing, examination methods, reporting requirements and so on.  It also notes the personnel qualifications necessary for those performing the examination itself.

The changes in the ASTM E1417/E1417M-16 have been primarily generated by the addition of a new standard for the use of LED UV-A lamps.  This means that the referenced documents section is revised.  There’s also a new section 6.6.1.2.  Section 7.8.4.1 has been modified as well.   Additionally, there has been an editorial change in section 5.2.6.  The committee has included these in the list of corrections at the end of the publication.

Now to get your copy of the new standard.  You can order it in paper format or for pdf download at our Document Center webstore, www.document-center.com.  Here is a link to the order page for the ASTM E1417/E1417M for your convenience.  It is also available in a redline edition (1 clean copy and 1 marked-up previous edition).  And it can be included in our Standards Online enterprise access cloud service.

New ASTM E1417/E1417M 2013 Edition for Liquid Penetrant Testing

ASTM E1417/E1417M, “Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Testing,” has just been released as the new 2013 Edition.  The document establishes the minimum requirements for conducting liquid penetrant examination of nonporous metal, and nonmetal components.  It’s a widely used standard among our customers.

The Practice replaces the now obsolete MIL-STD-6866, as well as the previous 2011 Edition (editorially corrected in 2012).  The tests are applicable to in-process, final, and maintenance (in-service) examinations.

These processes can be used for the detection of discontinuities, such as lack of fusion, corrosion, cracks, laps, cold shuts, and porosity, that are open or connected to the surface of the component under examination.

You’ll find the changes to this new edition include:

  • A new section 6.7.4.1
  • An updated Table 1
  • A revised Section 7.8.4.2(1) and
  • An updated Keywords section

If you need more detail on the changes, you’re welcome to purchase the redline edition, which comes with not only the new 2013 Edition, but also a copy of the previous 2011 Edition with all the changes clearly marked.

We invite you to review our page of ASTM standards in the Volume 03.03 if you are looking for additional ASTM Non-Destructive Tests.  To see a broader spectrum of such documents, you can review the standards on the Document Center List of Standards on Environmental Testing.

The 11-page revision for ASTM E1417/E1417M is available from Document Center’s web store at www.document-center.com.  Or you are welcome to get in touch with us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).

We’ve been selling the ASTM standards since the 1980’s and have an extensive collection of obsolete revisions as well.  You can count on us to provide the documents and supporting services required to meet your contracts and certifications.

Editorial Changes issued for ASTM E1417, Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Testing

Recently ASTM International reissued the ASTM E1417-11 Edition, “Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Testing,” with editorial corrections.  Editorial corrections to an ASTM standard means that the technical content remains unchanged but that the text of the standard has been modified in some way.  The new ASTM E1417-11(e1) Edition is available from Document Center Inc. now.

For the ASTM E1417, the editorial changes included corrections to the metric conversions of subsection 6.6.2, deletion of some material in subsection 7.3.4.2, and addition of a phrase in subsection 7.8.2.6.

Since this standard is widely used in the industry, many of our customers are purchasing the corrected copy.  FYI: the document establishes the minimum requirements for conducting liquid penetrant examination of nonporous metal, and nonmetal components.

Established in 1898 originally as the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary standards developing organizations in the world.  It provides a forum for the development and publication of international voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems and services.  The organization has developed over 12,000 technical documents that are a basis for manufacturing, management, procurement, codes and regulations.

All these current ASTM standards, plus many obsolete editions as well, are available from Document Center Inc. at our website, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We have been a licensed dealer of the ASTM standards since the 1980’s.

New ASTM E1417 2011 Edition on Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Testing

There’s a new edition of the popular Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Testing, ASTM E1417-11 2011 Edition.  The 11 page revision replaces the ASTM E1417-05(e1) Edition from 2005 and the MIL-STD-6866.  The document establishes the minimum requirements for conducting liquid penetrant examination of nonporous metal, and nonmetal components.

The document has been redesignated to ASTM E1417/E1417M.  This redesignation means that the document contains measurements in both metric and feet and inches.

This practice is written so it can be specified on the engineering drawing, specification, or contract. It is not a detailed how-to procedure to be used by the inspector and, therefore, must be supplemented by a detailed procedure that conforms to the requirements of this practice. Specification ASTM E165 contains information to help develop detailed requirements.

The penetrant examination processes described in this practice are applicable to in-process, final, and maintenance (in-service) examinations. These processes are applicable for the detection of discontinuities, such as lack of fusion, corrosion, cracks, laps, cold shuts, and porosity, that are open or connected to the surface of the component under examination.

Caution must be exercised in the usage of elevated temperature with components manufactured from thermoplastic materials. Also, some cleaners, penetrants, and developers can have a deleterious effect on nonmetallic materials such as plastics. Prior to examination, tests should be conducted to ensure that none of the cleaning or examination materials are harmful to the components to be examined.

All documents mentioned above, including the new ASTM E1417, are available from Document Center Inc.  Use our website, www.document-center.com, or call us (650-591-7600), fax us (650-591-7617) or send us an email (info@document-center.com).  We can assist you with both current and obsolete revisions of the documents you’re interested in.
