Changes to BPVC 2015 Sections VIII and IX

BPVC, “ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,” is being revised.  The new BPVC 2015 Edition will be available in July and you’ll want to pre-order your copy from Document Center Inc. now.  I recently reviewed the changes to Sections I to V.  So today I’ll take a look at the changes for Sections  VIII and IX.

As I noted previously, this new update replaces the 2013 Edition which is now obsolete.  Another thing to recognize is that the set is now updated on a two year schedule.  This change means that the addenda are not released any more.  However, the interpretations are still available and are posted online.  If you use the BPVC, you’ll want to make sure you update your copies on this new 2-year cycle.

Now for the changes to Sections VIII and IX for the new 2015 Edition:

Section VIII, Division 1:

  • Code case 2560 has been incorporated
  • Intent interpretation with revision to UCL-11 and revision to Part 3.3.6.2
  • Parts U-2(b) and U-2(e) for clarifying inspector responsibility for the review of calculations has also been updated
  • UHA-51, UG-40(e), UW-3(a) and UW-11(a) have revisions and interpretations
  • Paragraph UCS-66(f) is changed

Section VIII, Division 2:

  • Changes have been made to the review of environmental factor for structural stress method
  • Changes occur in Table 6.1 on equations for calculating forming strains and Code Case 2804
  • Paragraphs 3.11.2.2(b), 3.11.4, 4.5.2, Table 4.2.1 and Table 7.2 have revisions and interpretations

Section VIII, Division 3:

  • There’s a new mandatory Appendix for moving KD-240 linear elastic analysis
  • The final revisions to Code Case 2579 have been incorporated
  • Changes have been made to KM-211.2 (a), (b), and (d) for the manufacture of large vessels from single piece forgings
  • Modifications have been made for rupture disk devices

Section IX:

  • Friction stir welding procedure qualification has been changed
  • Electrofusing in Part QF has been modified
  • There’s a new non-mandatory Appendix on the qualification of welders using ISO rules
