New IEC 62559-2 – Use Case Methodology

IEC 62559-2, “Use case methodology – Part 2: Definition of the templates for use cases, actor list and requirements list,” has just been released.  It cancels and replaces the IEC/PAS 62559 which is now obsolete.  It is the first release in what will be a 3 or 4 part series on Use Case Methodology.  This tool is expected to support the development of complex systems for such applications as smart cities, the smart grid, and so on. When released in it’s entirety, the series will enable a user to conceptualize the many possible ways a system will be utilized, set up a series of templates to formalize each of those ways, and then turn those requirements into xml based templates for use in development.

Why has the use case model been developed?  It provides a unique way to gather information on the requirements for a complex system from experts with varying backgrounds.  It also allows for developing a complex system by breaking it down into concrete action items all supporting defined requirements.  This is an essential activity in such challenging standardization projects like the smart grid initiative when there is a need for the development of many standards by multiple technical committees.

What will you learn in the IEC 62559-2?  The standard starts with the usual scope paragraph.  No reference documents in this one, but a lengthy terms and definitions section that will help all those involved in use cases.  Now Clause 4 provides you with information on what a use case template actually is.  Since we’re talking about the concepts of “templates,” “actors,” and their “requirements,” this is a very helpful section.  Further exploration of the concepts is provided in Clauses 5, 6, and 7.  Need examples to put this into practice?  Annex A covers examples of actors, while Annex B provides you with examples of the suggested use case template of the standard.  A 23-item bibliography completes the 122-page publication.

How will you get a copy of the IEC 62559-2?  As noted on the first page of the publication, you’ll need to use an authorized distributor to purchase this document because it is covered by the laws of copyright.  Document Center Inc. has been an authorized distributor of the IEC standards since the 1990’s.  You can purchase your copies of all IEC standards with confidence from our webstore at www.document-center.com.  Use this link to go directly to the order page for IEC 62559-2.  Should you have any questions or need assistance, contact our staff directly by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re your standards experts!
