New ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code for 2014

The popular Code on Power Piping, ASME B31.1, has just been revised and will start shipping next month.  It’s used by manufacturers, designers, operators and owners of piping systems for steam, water, oil, gas, air services and more.  Regulators rely on the code as well!  You’ll find it frequently referenced in the BPVC (Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code) Section I.  And it’s a companion to the ASME B31.3 on process piping.

You’ll use the ASME B31.1 for piping systems in electric power generating plants, industrial and institutional plants, geothermal heating systems, and central and district heating and cooling systems.  The standard provides the minimum requirements for design, materials, fabrication, construction, testing, inspection, operation and maintenance of this type of system.  You’ll also find information on boiler-external piping for power boilers and high-temperature, high pressure water boilers.

What kinds of updates can you expect to find in this new revision?  The rules for nonmetallic piping and piping lined with nonmetals have been updated to a mandatory appendix (previously non-mandatory.)  Part of Appendix V has also been made mandatory by inclusion in chapter 7.  Preheat and post weld heat treatment rules have been reformatted.  The new tabular format provides greater clarity for you, the user.  And chapter 5 has been expanded by the inclusion of cold forming rules for creep strength enhanced ferritic steels.
