New ISO 50002 – Auditing requirements for energy performance

You’ve decided to improve the energy performance of your organization — to reduce the costs of energy consumption and to promote “green” practices with both environmental and customer relationship benefits.  You need a way to set your course for continual improvement in this area.  And you need a way to measure your results on a regular basis.  You’ve turned to the ISO 50001, “Energy management systems – Requirements with guidance for use” for planning.  To measure your results, there’s a new ISO 50002 companion document, “Energy audits – Requirements with guidance for use.”

As they say, if you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.  So for every management system, there must be a corresponding auditing standard.  This new ISO 50002 covers the requirements that support energy management systems.  When you’re ready to take the plunge and start auditing your energy system, this is the document you’ll use.

Your audit will be a detailed analysis of the energy performance of your organization — from the equipment and processes to general efficiency and consumption.  You’ll identify and prioritize opportunities to improve performance and reduce waste.  And you’ll have supporting documentation to show related environmental benefits.  Recommendations from the audit will be ranked to help you identify where the most likely candidates for both energy performance and financial improvements lie.

You’ll get detailed information on what to expect from your energy auditor and the audit they’ll perform.  And the audit itself is covered in detail.  You’ll learn how the audit is planned, what kinds of data collection and meetings will take place, how the data will be analyzed, and what your report will include.  Annex A gives you a roundup of the types of audits you can choose from, as well as an overview of things you need to consider in mapping out your approach to an audit.  The bibliography finishes up with 12 related standards you may find to be useful.

More standards in the series are under development and should be released soon.  These include:

  • ISO 50003, Energy management systems – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of energy management systems
  • ISO 50004, Energy management systems – Guidance for the implementation, maintenance and improvement of an energy management system
  • ISO 50006, Energy management systems – Measuring energy performance using energy baselines (EnB) and energy performance indicators (EnPI) – General principles and guidance
  • ISO 50015, Energy management systems – Measurement and verification of energy performance of organizations – General principles and guidance
