New ISO 8098 3rd Edition released for Children’s Bikes

The development and distribution of safe equipment for children is a top concern for industry and consumers alike.  So we’re always interested in standards that promote safety when it comes to products for kids.  The new ISO 8098 3rd Edition, “Cycles – Safety requirements for bicycles for young children,” is one such document.  It’s a major technical update for the standard and should be reviewed by bicycle manufacturers and regulators.

ISO 8098 is for bicycles marketed to children in the four- to eight-year-old range.  FYI:  Bicycles for children under four years of age are considered “toys” and those for children over eight are covered by the ISO-4210, “Cycles – Safety requirements for bicycles.”  And BMX cycles are also not included in this new update.

The 2014 edition for ISO 8098 expands the document and reorganizes the material it covers.  Rather than dividing subassemblies and test methods into two distinct sections, they are merged into the new “Requirements and test methods” Clause 4.  This means that for each of the components of a cycle, the requirements and tests to support that requirement are joined together.

New clauses have also been added for Instructions (Clause 5) and Marking (Clause 6).  Both requirements have been expanded, with new durability requirements (and tests) for marking included as well.

Another new feature of this edition is the addition of two annexes.  Annex A covers steering geometry and Annex B is on the verification of free fall velocity.  These two concepts were not addressed in previous editions.  The bibliography has been expanded from 3 documents to 9.
