New MIL-STD-101 C – Colors for Gas Pipelines and Cylinders

The MIL-STD-101, “Color Code for Pipelines and for Compressed Gas Cylinders,” is used for the paints and coatings on piping systems and cylinders for gas.  It covers a common color code system and has not been revised since 1970.  However, the “de-commissioning” of the FED-STD-595 and the move to the use of the CIELAB color system instead has initiated a review of this document.  Which means there’s just been the release of a new Revision C for this standard.

Good news for all you MIL-STD-101 users — the new Revision C is clearly marked in the margins where changes have occurred.  However, there’s a lot of black margin lines in this new release!

You’ll note that medical gases have been removed from the MIL-STD-101C.  (FYI:  They’re now covered by the NATO Standard AMedP-53.)  Also, there’s been a number of new “assignments” since 1970 and these new materials are now included in the standard.  The ANSI Z48.1 references have been replaced by references to the CGA C7 standard instead, “Guide to the Preparation of Precautionary Labeling and Marking of Compressed Gas Containers.”  And there’s clarification regarding the need for adherence to the Department of Transportation regulations for required marking and stamping when applicable.

If you provide the Department of Defense with gas piping, gas cylinders, or gas transport systems, you’ll need a copy of the new document.  Consider using Document Center as your source for your government publications like this one.  You’ll find it easy to order at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or you can contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617, or email (info@document-center.com).  You can get your copy in paper format, as a pdf download, or for multi-user access with our Standards Online subscription service.
